I am not a site moderator and I am not a spokesperson for Bethesda. I am just a modder like the rest of you, and I posted this about 12 hours after I was made aware of this issue and asked to bring this issue up by the S.T.E.P team. I can do no more than that.

Thanks Gopher

I always knew pushing skyrim engine to far would cause Ctd, But now knowing what it is that pushes Skyrim, I can now better select mods for smoother game. I run 190 to 200 mods many are armor and scripted mods like wet and cold and frostfall. The discussion is great now that we know what to look for mabe some one can come up with a solution or just a way to know where im cap at.

I only get CTDs when i scroll the forge menu to fast after playing for a few hours or after 3 dungeons or so most of the time i have been just reloading skyrim when i get up to grab a drink or every few hours of play. but this 3.1 gb limit really would explain a lot.

@ loureed
Maybe you could have written an article about it instead, but you did not. At least Gopher bothered to do so. Not everyone knew this, nor did they reach this memory limit before.

I mostly get infinite loading screens when hitting memory limit, rarely CTDs.

Could a mod please push this piece of the thread elsewhere? It detracts from the point rather drastically.

The fact is that not may people have modded the game to the extent that they would hit the "3.1 GB" ceiling (it is actually more likely a 4 GB ceiling on 64-bit platforms).

This is obviously news to most people, and that is why it is being publicized here.

In response to post #8427991. #8428008 is also a reply to the same post.

I hardly can imagine that, people must have noticed that 4GB never worked on a x64 system, did somebody ever try that before everybody started talking about it? So I have to assume that everybody was just theorycrafting without knowing anything. But thanks for the reply.

It's true that a lot of people are likely not aware of this issue. But then there's the point that a lot of people also don't care or don't care enough to actually try around, looking for issues and similar. Or even don't check this news out, because they simply wouldn't grasp why. Therefore I hope Gopher explained it easy and fast in the video (I didnt watch it) and the article shouldn't just disappear with the next news, so that more people have a benefit from this. But yeah, the Nexus/Skyrimnexus is already overloaded with what it does. Not sure if there should be another page, addressing the most critical bugs and mistakes you can do if you mod your game, or not.

This problem is sadly the legacy of Bethesda's decision to develop Skyrim for old, horribly obsolete console hardware first, which ended up badly restraining the game. Thankfully the next round of consoles will be 64-bit, so that will free up a lot of resources on PCs for games that could not be used before because developers were lazy and wouldn't build PC games for 64 bit systems.
