i've seen it mentioned twice in the last 2 days with no actual reference to what it is. I searched "vanity mode" on here and found naught. can someone tell me what this means? is it just the 3rd person view?

It's the third-person camera slowly rotating around the player that is switched to automatically after the player is idle for a short period of time. It can be controlled by the console commands EnableVanityMode, DisableVanityMode, GetVanityModeDisabled, and ToggleVanityMode (TVM), and the gameplay setting fVanityDelay.

You can also hold down the tab key and move the mouse around your character. I'm not sure if that counts as vanity mode but it certainly works better for getting the angle you want for a screenie.

you could also kinda cheat and set your acrobatics in the 500+ and use tgm to land safely and make some nice screenies when holding the attack key and jump

Vanity mode is very useful, for seeing how good your character looks in that armor/with that weapon and shield combo.
though i have no clue how to make screenies...

add this to the morrowind.ini file:
screen shot enable=1
i usually hold down the tab key for my screenshots. that way i can pose with enemies (invisible)
