Something that people need to realize is that the creators of Morrowind wanted you to be a Dark elf. It's no coincidence that they have the most character creation options.

Plus, its kinda common sense that the reincarnation of a dark elf (Neverar) would be another dark elf....

Not sure if this helps to prove or disprove if they're overrated. Both?

PErsonal thoughts on this are:

After the war was won, and the dwemer disappeared, the tools of kagrenac were collected, and dagoth ur held them. Nerevar was killed, and the tribunal took the tools, and was severley chastised, and cursed, by Azura. They tribunal used the tools themselves, and the chimer race became white-haired and dark-skinned, and azura said that the chimer had changed to reflect the decision of the tribunal... Therefore, nerevar, already being dead, was not changed into a dunmer, but remained chimer. So technically Nerevar should be coming back as a Chimer.

To be honest, a non-dunmer would have a hard time proving that he was the reincarnation of nerevar to the ashlanders, as well as to some of the house council members. Therefore, very few (if any!) would ever even have a chance of rising beyond the trial of the ashkhan! So they wouldnt be sent to the cavern of the incarnate!

Sorry if i seem rude here, but this is a major annoyance of mine... i hate the fact that Nerevar was 'supposed' to be one of the ugly dark elves... i mean, gray skin and white hair... makes me think of some ugly monster... troll-like... emaciated troll-like... They should have allowed you to at least reclaim your rightful appearance of a chimer at some point in the game... speaking of which, anyone want to make a mod for this? )

Here is a quote from the Morrowind book entitled "The Battle of Red Mountain, and the Rise and fall of the Tribunal." This is after the tribunal broke their oath and and gained powers from the heart of Lorkan.

After it explains about how Azura scolded the Tribunal, it goes into this:

And then, in that moment, all Chimer were changed into Dunmer, and our skins turned ashen and our eyes into fire. Of course, we only knew at that time that this had happened to us, but Azura said, "This is not my act, but your act. You have chosen your fate, and the fate of your people, and all the Dunmer shall share your fate, from now to the end of time. You think yourselves gods, but you are blind, and all is darkness." And Azura left us alone, in darkness, and we were all afraid, but we put on brave faces, and went forth from Red Mountain to build the new world of our dreams.

If Nerevar really was to be reincarnated, then he should be reincarnated as a Chimer. Dunmer sort of makes sense, but Nerevar deserves better than to be reincarnated as a Dunmer, which was the product of a betrayal towards him.

If, say, an Argonian were to try to declare himself as the Nerevarine, I really don't think that could realistically work in the Elder Scrolls world. Especially with such a shady background as the main character has. Being in an Imperial spy faction? Personally delivered from the Emporer? Possibly not a Dunmer? It would never work. But still, it doesn't take a Nerevar incarnate to find the Keening and Sunder, defeat Dagoth Ur, rid Vvardenfell of the deadly ash-blight, and stop the false Tribunal.

Eiade, if Morrowind worked realistically, Then people (without the help of spells) would not be able to jump across the Odai river...

Anyway I think the reason there is so many dunmer to choose from in the game is not to simply ''push'' the player towards being a dunmer, but because the main populus of Vvardenfell is Dunmer and nobody wants to see twin, non-related, Dunmer in a city. (Or for that matter at all but you cant compare dunmer in different cities. Not enough view range.)

Although Eiade is correct in saying that an Argonian would not be likely accepted by the native peoples, If the only way to become Nerevarine was to be a dunmer, then that would ruin the storyline. And He is also right about the keening and sunder thing. So all in all, I think it would be a great idea for someone to make a Chimer race. *Looks DIRECTLY at Geonox, who is currently using his mad modeling skills to make yet another unbelievable mod.*

Ok, realistically, if you're going by the history of Morrowind, then yes, the reincarnation would be a chimer. But if you're going by what the game options give you, then the best and most realistic choice for the reincarnation would be a dark elf.

And Crim, i think you should look at some book cover art on R.A. Salvatore's The Hunter's Blades trilogy. The art shows how dark elves are supposed to look, well, at least how they're supposed to look in the Forgotten Realms. They're depicted as an elegant, beautiful race. Not quite the ugly versions you're used to in Morrowind.

couple things...

It may not take the Nerevarine to become hortator, or nerevarine of the ashlanders, and it may not take the nerevarine to kill Dagoth Ur, wield keening/sunder/etc.

but it DOES take the nerevarine to be believed by Vivec, and to receive the wraithguard as a result. It also takes the Nerevarine to wear the moon and star. And my 'nerevarine' is a nord... (OT: favorite quote - "die puny snowman!!!") and quite often wore the moon and star... (as it says, the ring is enchanted to SLAY anyone who isnt Nerevar Reborn... is this realistic? Can i sell the ring to some merchant, have him wear it, and die? no way to tell...)

anyway, where can i find some these cover art book things? And for that matter, where could i get ahold of the books themselves?
(Almost certainly the dunmer arent supposed to be ugly, but for whatever reason they LOOK that way in morrowind... i never meant any offense about this...)

Eiade, isnt that the same book that i put on as a download? Or is that the one labeld "Vivec_no_murder"?

there you have a good point whit the ring thingy Crim!!!!!!!!

but if you sell the ring the game would be doomed to last forever whit you having no purpose of living enymore

and one thing, JUST KILL VIVEC AND TAKE WRAITHGUARD(just as i did when the only thing i needed to end Dagoth's life was that Wraithguard)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think of Nerevarine as a spirit, I think (because all are equal) the chosing of a new Nerevarine was compleatly random, who choses the Nerevarine, itself? and in that case what excacly in a Nerevarine (spirit, soul of an acent, magicka) ?

being as you are the "reincarnation" of nerevar you don't necessarily have to be a certain race. a spirit doesn't say "i was asian so i'm going to be asian again", it simply returns. same concept can be applied to orcs/elves/nords/etc.
