I recently got this game and was really enjoying it. at first it ran smooth and lag-less and i played with the view distance maxed out with a small number of mods: marc's vampire & house mods + signposts, exterior lights and bittercoast sounds.
Recently it started lagging around Balmoral, and lockups were getting more common. Now i get 5 fps everywhere (outdoors) and it locks up after a couple of minutes of gameplay. Loading older games seems to be ok, but i hate doing stuff over, and i get the feeling the problem will just occur again...
Is there any way to fix this? I've looked all over these forums and others but nothing's worked. Well, once something worked, it loaded up fine and i ripped around at normal framerates, i was extatic, but then it locked up on me and i haven't been able to duplicate it.
Whenever i get a lockup i can always three-finger salute to the taskmanager and kill the game. I almost never get any CTDs.
What's with this game?!

I *think* the way it works is this: You start a new game. Everything is still as it is in the data files. Once you've been around, meeting interesting people (and killing them), the game has to track more and more values, positions, and the like, and becomes slower. What specs for your computer?

yeah that sounds reasonable, but then again i'm only level 5!
i have a dell laptop with a PIII 1GHz, 512Megs Ram and a mobility 9000
i didn't put the specs because it ran great until recently..

Those ARE pretty low spec. The low spec coupled with the fact the game's performance deteriates the more you play the game could account for the CTDs

they're not low for this game, it's old. and as i've said, it ran great until just recently. a game's performance isn't supposed to degrade as you play it.

Well unfortuantly for you, Morrowind does. the first time I had a real beef with the game was because when I saved the game, it took FOREVER to save because I had done to much. And I mean, its understandable considering the size of the game and whatnot so I really couldnt complain.

ah fixed! for now
i'm back to sweet framerates. it was the modman windowlights mod (i think). I got rid of it and the BCsounds mod and it's smooth sailing again..
thanks for the replies, although i didn't get any advice here...

Whats "sweet rates" for you?
Just wondering cause I had a P4 2.6GHz, 128meg gForce4 mx440, and 512megs of RAM; and mine ran like poo most places... like 11-20fps.

well with the optimiser i still get around 30 fps at 2x max viewing distance when nobodys around..
do you run a lot of mods? i've learned that a bad one can really slow you down..
