So, I went into the Battle-born house during the "Missing in Action" quest to retrieve the Imperial missive and decided to be greedy and steal some other things, including keys on the sleeping Battle-borns, notes, and books. I didn't get caught or anything, no one even woke up and the old woman who's always sweeping the floor in the main room is apparently blind as a bat. However, a little bit later, after traveling to Falkreath for some quests, I came out of the Jarl's hall and there were three mercenaries waiting on me outside. Obviously, I proceed to facemurder them all before they can even pull out their weapons and then searched their bodies. I found a note from one of the Battle-borns saying to "rough me up but killing him isn't an issue either", or something to that effect, and saying that it was because I was a thief and stole from them.

I was wondering if this is something I can go back on and talk to one of them, maybe initiate a fight and let me kill the guy that sent the mercenaries? And, how the hell did they know I stole from them when I went in and out undetected and didn't even acquire any sort of bounty?

You can go back and talk to them if you want, but they'll have no knowledge of the theft, the note, or the mercenaries.

I have successfully stolen objects from various locations without being "noticed in the act" but "noticed in the area". It is these times that thugs get sent after me.

In your case, I'd say that the woman sweeping the floor saw you in the house, things turned up missing and they put two & two together. Then promptly forgot about it after having hired the thugs.  :P

So, it's just one of those radiant not-quite-quests, where you do something in x area and x NPC in that area has someone sent to kill you?

Somethings in this game get me halfway excited at maybe stumbling into some kind of new quest or getting to have an excuse to kill some of the more annoying characters, like that Nazeem guy always asking me if I "make it to the Cloud district often", then just turn out to be random "if X then X" actions made by the game.

I don't think you even need to be seen at all. I've gone into an empty house, stolen a few things, and then had the thugs sent after me. I think the game just assumes that the only guy who wanders between cities is the guy that steals from people. :P

Nope. No quest, all you can do is administer your own "justice", and then accept the consequences if you're caught. :P

Speaking of Nazeem, does anyone know about Winterstead Manor?  Does it have to do with Hearthfire?  Is there a mod that adds it as a player home?  Is it mentioned in any lore?

There is no such place, strangely.

Winterstead Manor seems to be some kind of goose chase. I know very little about it, but the very question you're asking is the only thing anyone has said about it, or that it has something to do with Whiterun.

I've had thugs sent after me too when there were no witnesses to the crime. The target was the only one around. (which wasn't even a crime since the target was a murdering vampire).

The only logical conclusion that can be drawn from this is that Skyrim has security cameras, and the dragonborn is somehow oblivious to Skyrims secret technological aptitude.

Or, Skyrim is the matrix, and intelligent computer programs are watching our every move.   ….and that was my embarrassing attempt at at a joke.  :pinch:

It is mentioned in the UESP wiki that Nazeem and a couple others carry keys for this location which is not present in the stock game.  Whether it was cut content or content that was never implemented is unknown.  USKP I believe removes the otherwise useless key.

I left helgen once and thalmor were sent to kill me. Apparently they must have elder scrolls telling them I'm an enemy of the state before I even am.

One of the first things I learned playing Skyrim is if you want to play a Thief, you first need to know how to defend yourself in combat.   A deer, a skeever, even a book will rat you out.
