In Oblivion, checking someone's inventory even if you don't take anything is considered theft. I accidentally got suspended from the Mages Guild because I didn't know that. Also, moving objects is also considered theft. This is stupid, because you'll get arrested for touching a cup. Also, are there mods that improve the HUD and menus? Because they are a little inconvenient, in my opinion.

Is checking a person's private & personal inventory an innocent activity in your book?

I'm sure you'd get _really_ upset if you caught anybody sticking his hands in your pockets. So why shouldn't they? Either get better at thievery, or don't complain for the consequences of your actions.

Put it in its Place - Enhanced Grabbing should do what you ask for - and a few more things. Make sure to read the readme. I haven't tried this myself and I will take no responsibility if your game gets screwed by it.

DarNified UI is an extremely popular GUI overhaul. Again, make sure to read the readme. There's room for lots of customizations to suit your tastes.

Have fun

Active Inventory Spell http://oblivion.nexu....com/mods/17497 will allow you to open and/or alter the inventory of any NPC without nasty repercussions. Very useful for playtesting armor and clothing mods.
