I have started getting a CTD at random places in the game and I want to make sure that what I am trying to do in order to isolate which mod is causing the issue is actually going to help.

I have used quite a large number of mods in my game. luckily I have kept track of which save games had which mods installed on them so I'm pretty sure which ones aren't causing an issue.

Am I correct in thinking that I can un-check the boxes next to each plugin? Then when I load up my latest save and if I have picked the right plugin to disable then the CTDs will stop. If my understanding is correct then I will need to make sure my game is saved away from anywhere affected by the plugin I have disabled. For example, if I un-check the box next to Pilotable Rowboat BETA.esp then I will make sure my save game is in a building where no rowboats will be loaded.

Will unchecking the box be enough or do I have to fully uninstall each mod before loading up my game?

My suspicion is that it is either Helgen Reborn or Better Fast Travel that is causing the issue. I hope I'm wrong as I really like both mods.

It depends on the mod, if there are scripts in it you can't just deactivate it, you have to go back to a previous save where the mod was not installed yet.

In fact, I advice you to never uninstall a mod while you keep playing your current game, always go back to a clean back-up save.

And its might not be one mod causing these problems but a combination of too many mods making your game unstable, basically the more mods you use the more unstable your game becomes unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Also some mods that extend cities or add a lot of objects cause CTD or infinite loading screens because your game can't handle it, especially if you use enhanced texture mods on top of that, all those extra objects and textures is just gonna make your game go berserk.

I read some people using more then 200 mods but personally I cant get above 80 without screwing up my game too much.

I just had a thought of what might b causing the issue but I don't know how to test it, let alone solve it.

I am using Expanded Towns and Cities. In order for this mod to work I had to download a patch to correctly place the wagons in the newly expanded towns and cities. The patch ends up as ETaC - BFT Patch.esp and one of its masters is BFT Ships and Carriages.esp. The possible problem I have just realised is that I downloaded the version of the Expanded Towns and Cities mod that works with Hearthfires. The esp file that comes with this is BFT Ships and Carriages - HF.esp.

When I first used the ETaC - BFT Patch.esp it kept giving me a CTD right from the menu screen because it couldn't find BFT Ships and Carriages.esp so in order to fix the issue I deleted the " - HF" from BFT Ships and Carriages - HF.esp and suddenly the Better Fast Travel mod worked........sometimes.

I'm wondering if the changing the name of the esp file could be causing an issue with the other two files associated with this mod, BFT Ships and Carriages - HF.bsl and BFT Ships and Carriages - HF.bsa. Sadly the person who created the patch for Expanded Towns and Cities did not create a patch for the mod that includes Hearthfires.

Any suggestions? Could this even be the cause of my CTDs?
