YES, this is the troubleshooting forum. Any trouble you have from here on, should be posted on this thread. Please refer to the FAQ prior to posting anything.

Q: What should my first step in troubleshooting always be?
A: Read the instructions to your mods, paying special attention to compatibly/FAQs/Troubleshooting sections.

Q: That seems obvious, would you care to provide a real troubleshooting step?
A: No, but since you were so polite :P Refresh your .ini files as shown on the guide section 4F. This is the fastest and easiest potential issue to resolve.

Q: Can you provide a load order as viable reference?
A: No. Load orders are often experimental, mine is now simply outdated. Aside from which, what works for one person, may not work as well for another.

Q: Is Cleanmem functional on Windows XP, 8 etc.?
A: Not that I'm aware of. I use windows 7, so I don't honestly know. Previous posters claim that it does not help with Windows 8.

Q: Where should I upload my load order/papyrus logs?
A: Here using an alternative means such as pastebin.com. We want to try to keep things as organized as possible.

Q: Do you use, recommend or have experience with the "Skyrim Save Cleaner?"
A: No. Clean saves are only achieved by the "New" button on the main menu screen.

Q: Do you recommend the the use of ENBoost or the ENB binaries supporting memory reducing functionality?
A: Yes, but I will not troubleshoot any issues related to ENB/ENBoost, ENBs or any presets you may select here on the Nexus.

Q: Do you still offer support here?
A: Seldom do I actively pursue an issue as I used to. You are free to post your logs/load orders and i may have a glance and give you some tips.

One last thing. I will instantly ignore people who add their requests and post their load order/papyrus logs directly to the forums. It is bothersome to see a single request take up an entire page. If you have done this, rectify it by editing your post or you will not receive an answer from me. Use a site like pastebin.com to upload such things, and keep the forums nice for the rest of us. Thanks.

Hello GrandBulwark :)

In-line with your new posting rules, please may I request assistance (when you have time - I understand you're busy) with my ongoing Skyrim issue.

My issue is that the game will CTD randomly, or (more recently) crash with "Skyrim has stopped working" forcing you to manually close the game down. This is triggered when running the tests outlined in section 4H of your guide and can occur at any time. That being said, my quickest crash was after one minute and my longest after 13 minutes (I made sure to stay as close to the ground as possible when running around quickly).

My load order is as follows:

http://pastebin.com/4pfN34wF

(Note: Main .esm files not cleaned for most recent tests to see if it improved stability - which it doesn't seem to)

My Papyrus logs are as follows:

http://pastebin.com/EgMQ0nxC

Windows Application Event Log for "Skyrim has stopped working":

http://pastebin.com/zWGbnuLW

I have verified integrity of game cache and re-run above tests, which results in the same thing.

Alright. Given that now I can see all the information, here is what I would suggest. First of all, try refreshing the .ini files. If you've been there and done that, it's time to assume orphaned script or that scripts are NOT initializing as they should. Your first step is simple, load your first save before the save is dependent to any mods, aside from the DLCs which should be loaded immediately. Make sure your entire load order is activated and see how long it takes for menus to initialize in MCM. You'll of course need mods with menus to see if things are properly initializing.

Next, make sure you aren't running with logging activated all the time. Also, try visiting the cleanmem forum topic and set up cleanmem to run Skyrim on an only list. Get back to me with your results.

Hi buddy,

Thanks for the response.

I can confirm the following:

* When running logging, I enable the required lines of the skyrim.ini until I get the logs I need, then I disable logging by changing the required lines from a 1 to a 0 (done in my games\skyrim AND within Mod Organizer)
* I have tried refreshing my .ini's and re-running the tests with logging disabled (same thing)
* The only mods installed before Helgen were the official DLC's/patches. The Hi-Res Packs and SkyUI were added after Helgen. I have two saves "baseline after Helgen" (DLC/patches) and "Baseline + mods" (DLC/Patches & SkyUI). I ran the aforementioned tests on both saves with logging disabled - same thing. I only enabled logging to get you the most recent log file and upload it for your review.
* My load order is activated and SkyUI appears in the MCM menu immediately upon pressing ESC and going to 'mod configuration'.
* Cleanmem 'only list' has been set up as per your guide (thanks for that! ).

UPDATE:

I can now replicate the "Skyrim has stopped working" 100% of the time by using PerfMon. Whenever PerfMon is active and I quit the game, I will get the above error guaranteed. If I run without PerfMon and quit - I get no crash. I originally thought the error was attributed to the use of SBW (simple borderless window) but I was wrong.

I have since re-installed Steam cleanly following this method (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9609-OBMP-2526), copied my "steamapps" directory to another drive (it's pristine following complete re-download of everything), re-installed the Steam client, DirectX and Redistributables etc and copied the directory back and performed an overwrite. I have refreshed my ini files and deselected the option to run windowed.

I'm going to deselect SkyUI and the Hi-Res Packs in MO Plugins tab, go through Helgen again, make more clean saves and re-run the tests. I'll let you know once I have an update.

I find it odd that performance monitor would cause the crashes as the performance monitor that i'm thinking of (i assume is the one from here on the nexus?) was designed to run while skyrim was running (how else would it monitor the game eh?)

however i do know that skyrim engine can be finicky with any external programs running. for example msi afterburner can cause a guaranteed crash if used with enb, and has a high crash rate without enb. however some things are ok to use, i use a fan control for my gpu and it does not affect skyrim at all. in other words

running anything external that taps into skyrim is a no no when shooting for stability.

I hope everything runs well for you in the future, you've put a lot of work into being able to play the game! ;D

I'm staying positive and I'm not giving up is the main thing! I'd of quit a long time ago if it weren't for your assistance to date.

Yes I agree, PerfMon shouldn't be a cause of issues - it never used to be. It's only since using MO and launching MO via PerfMon (that's the only way to get it to report on Skyrim) that I've been having this kind of crash. When I started afresh last night, I unchecked SkyUI and the Hi-Res Packs from the plugins tab in MO and started a new game. When I got inside the keep in Helgen, I opened up my inventory and SkyUI was running o_O

I thought if you deselected the plugin it shouldn't run in-game? Or, must you completely uninstall it from the MO mod directory for that to happen?

with MO, unchecking the plugin in the esp tab and the bsa in the archive tab should do the trick. for the rare occasion that the mod gets loaded anyway (happens sometimes with NMM too so this is a bug for just about any sort of mod handling software) then just uncheck the mod in the left pane, the mods list. if that doesn't do the trick then there is something wrong with your setup i.e. you have skyui installed somewhere else and activated.

Thanks Neko :)

I will do that later on today and create a nice clean save.

I've cherry picked the mods I'm going to install one by one after Helgen (having read the mod descriptions many times now) for once I resolve the current issue. Do you see anything wrong with these mods, or could you recommend something better? Basically, I'm looking for:

* Texture replacer/enchancer mods for pretty much everything that don't contribute to a "world edit" whilst not going above x1024 res, do not utilise scripts and won't kill my VRAM (and hence RAM) usage.
* Better combat audio
* Immersion in any form so long as it doesn't break the game long run and doesn't stray too far from Vanilla
* Inventory Management (Pretty much SkyUI)

That's it! I'm not looking to go overboard (again..) and I'm going to try and keep my load order to 20-30 mods absolute maximum. Decided not to opt for ENB because they rely on things like lighting and weather mods (contain scripts - no thanks). So, on that note, here's what I'm looking to install, and can you see any issues affecting a complete playthrough if I install them:

1) A Quality World Map
2) Acquisitive Soul Gems
3) aMidianBorn Book of Silence (all 5 - Armours, Creatures, Dragonborn DLC, Unique Items, Weapons)
4) Bellyache Creature Pack
5) Bellyache HD Dragons
6) Better Weapon Swings
7) Ceramic Style Potions
8 ) Detailed Chests
9) Detailed Rugs
10) Get Snowy
11) HD Baskets
12) HD Enchanced Terrain and Map Snow
13) HD Keys
14) HD Misc Items
15) HD Ore & Ingots
16) HD Linens
17) HD Sacks
18 ) HD Paper
19) HD Food & Ingredients
20) Improved Combat Sounds
21) Realistic Smoke & Embers
22) Silly Level of Detail Wine Cellar Full Pack
23) Skyrim Flora Overhaul Basic
24) Skyrim Community Uncapper
25) SkyUI
26) Static Mesh Improvement Mod
27) Tobes High Res Textures
28 ) WATER

Maybe - Enhanced Blood Testures (textures only), Immersive Armours/Weapons & Ultimate HD Fire Effects.
