Returning to Skyrim, overwhelmed...

So I've put my copy of Skyrim back on my computer. Stripped everything out from the old install and did a clean install. I've got the configurator, SKSE, the creation kit...a few other things.

In exploring several things though, I've found I end up feeling clueless and have questions I am hoping you all can help me with.

Body mods: At this point there seem to be a dozen of them, all with half a dozen variations; some with sliders and bouncing, some with not--some requiring special work to make the sliders and bouncing work. Some of them, I can't even tell the differences between. Someone care to clear the air a bit on this subject? Tell me which one is most frequently modded for (the most content made for it) and what all this slider business is about and whether it is as complicated as some of the tutorials I've seen make it seem?

Cleaning Master Files: I've seen a lot about cleaning one's mods over the years but as I've never gotten around to making a mod I've never had to bother. Now I see people talking about cleaning their master files. What exactly does this do?

SKSE and scripting: A two parter as they are directly related. I have SKSE, I have mods that use it. I cam't seem to find anything that actually tells me what SKSE adds and so far I've found very little about scripting in Skyrim in general. Most of what I've found is either people asking this very question or links to now gone sites. I am assuming there must be tutorials and such that I have somehow managed not to find in my googling.

Multi-mode installers: As someone who would like to get into modding and have some of my mods set up in such a way that they'd offer options to best suit what the user might or might not have already in place; I'd like to build one of these handy installer wizard things I've seen on some mods. My issue arises at the fact that their seems to be multiple methods and some argument as to how well they work. Some material I've found says its ridiculous to make an NMM and Bash compatible mod while I've seen mods that manage it. Is someone able to offer some insight into these methods and link me to a tutorial or something on how its done? Ideally something more then 'copy an fomod' as I'm new to modding and dont know how those work either. :P

Bethesda websites: Not related to modding but I figure I should ask. In my trying to learn about modding I have found many links that would typically lead to the various Bethesda websites....but it seems they are all down. Has this been going on long? Did the company close down or get bought out or something and I just can't find evidence of it on google?

Well, for the most part I'll tell you this, cleaning your master files using Tes5Edit is brilliant...my game use to run at around 28 frames per second and I did this and now I'm running at 58 frames. If you'd like to know more I'm gonna give you a link for Tes5Edit as well as a link to a great video showing you exactly what to do just in case it helped me out a lot.

Video for Tes5Edit-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re8YBJm9l64

Tes5Edit-http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25859/?

I hope this helps you out, go ahead and look at Gophers other videos he will help you out a lot with almost anything involving modding as well as Skyrim itself. Also if you wouldn't mind clicking on the picture to view my YouTube channel I'd appreciate it very much. Good modding, and good luck.

Edit: You should check out Gopher his is the video I linked for you...he has a video where he will explain in the greatest of detail your questions about SKSE. He does the best job explaining everything in the fullest of details while keeping it simple.

There are a lot of Body Mods now I personally have swicthed back and forth from body mods, I am personally currently using CBBE with Bodyslide and TBBP, But I am looking to swicth to ADEC. CBBE has a ton of content for it same with UNP. The other ones dont have much but I would choose CBBE with Bodyslide++ beacause you can customize to anything that you prefer.

Thank you very much. Greatly appreciated. I had not even seen mention of TESVedit prior to now...and good to know about the results it gets. Running Skyrim on a not high end laptop, I am happy to get more performance. Now, one question; I would clean the master files latest to the earliest?

Isn't this the exact same video as linked above? 0.o

On the issue of body mods again. CBBE, UNP, UNPB, CBBE++...a slew of body mods and variations there upon and I'm lost in years of debate and updates and such.

Which female body mod is most popular?

How is it people are apparently fitting armors for one body type to the other using body slide? I see it mentioned but I can't seem to find out HOW people do it. It apparently involves bodyslide but...

Bouncing: This is one of the reasons I am confused on the matter. I'd like to have this but there seems to be several skeletons and animation packs and a physics pack and...well, it seems like a lot of work to get this working. Am I seeing more work then there is? Does this work with UNP?

Yes and no, I linked you to an older version but pretty much the same and as for cleaning them...just follow along with what Gopher says. If you listen to him and pause video and go step by step with what he does you will be perfectly fine. I recommend this for everyone who has ever thought of even playing vanilla Skyrim on PC.

Here are answers to your questions I think I can reliably answers.

So I've put my copy of Skyrim back on my computer. Stripped everything out from the old install and did a clean install. I've got the configurator, SKSE, the creation kit...a few other things.

IMO, you should not mess with the ini's except to activate script logging. Especially since you're running Skyrim on a "not high end laptop". You'll most likely end screwing it up enough that you'll put it away again.

You should probably check out this mod http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/14504/? as it is specifically created to run on a laptop.

Cleaning Master Files: I've seen a lot about cleaning one's mods over the years but as I've never gotten around to making a mod I've never had to bother. Now I see people talking about cleaning their master files. What exactly does this do?

The CK adds or leaves in ITM (Identical to Master) records. While these usually are non-game affecting, why run a mod with them in it? The other big issue is Deleted records. This issue CAN f-up your game and cause CTDs. Mod A deletes a particular item. You also have Mod B in your load order which does something with that item. CTD. Tes5Edit will UNdelete and disable that item to prevent the CTD.

SKSE and scripting: A two parter as they are directly related. I have SKSE, I have mods that use it. This is popular - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/1334//?

Is creates links to virtual folders for your mod installation. I don't use it myself, tried it, didn't care for it.

I don't use NMM either. I use Wrye Bash.

Links for BASH - http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1321633-relz-bain-tools/ http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1471586-relz-wrye-bash-thread-33/

Whatever material you saw that said "its ridiculous to make an NMM and Bash compatible mod" is simply horse piss.

One thing you didn't mention is BOSS. Load order for Skyrim has the potential to really f-up your game. BOSS will automatically sort your mod list into an order that is generally accepted as the best for the particular mods you have loaded.

And if you disagree with the placement of a particular mod, you can tell BOSS where you want it loaded.

Not sure why you could find the Beth forums - virtually every link I put down refers to them.

There are around 50 female body mods, the majority of which, in my view, seem to be people making UNP bodies more like CBBE. X3

The most popular female body mod is still CBBE. BodySlide/CB++ is a CBBE-only tool that allows you to customise the shape of the female body mesh to meet your own preferences. It can also be used to customise the shape of BodySlide-compatible outfits to meet your own preferences, and the next version of BodySlide will have an auto-BodySlide tool, which will allow you to convert almost any outfit mod to . A new skeleton/animations is only necessary if for some reason you want BBP.
