I always thought that the imperial quest line was the best I don't really know why I guess I just think that in my opinion that the Stormcloaks were fighting for a pointless cause (no offense to anybody that prefers the Stormcloaks over the Imperials:)).

Mods I recommend:

 

Pit Fighter and its add-on Pit Fighter Travels  (search Pit on the steam workshop and they will show up) top quality mod

 

Age of Conan (search Conan on the nexus and you will see it) has great quality armor and weapons, plus a great little quest.

 

Eagle's Nest (nexus) great little player home. epic view, epic location and your own steward and guard

 

Sword of Sidgan (nexus) great if you want a fun combat and story style dungeon

 

MERPS Gondorian Armanants (nexus) also great LOTR stuff (from the canceled MERP skyrim Project)

 

when in doubt, search for what you want to see...and most of the time you will find it

 

Gondor Armor (nexus) great if like LOTR stuff

 

LOTR Weapon Ismerial (nexus) high quality weapons, also great if you like LOTR

 

Bosmer Armor Pack (nexus) nice lore-friendly armor

I would perhaps unsurprisingly recommend all of my own mods, especially Better Fitting Steel Helms and Grayhill Keep.

 

I'd also recommend the following:

 

Rorik's Keep: A cool little fortress that has often been an inspiration for my own work.

 

Glimmer: A nice broadsword. Very high quality.

 

Stormborn Iron Armor: A cool higher defense set of Iron Banded armor. It was created using Cabal's excellent textures.

 

Cascades: One of the best, if not THE best player abode that uses Dwemer architecture.

 

Testigers Armor Workshop- This excellent new armor mod featues  terrific new versions of male ebony and wolf armor. The Wolf Armor I especially like, since it fixes the beer belly and just generally makes it look more heroic.

 

Lorkhans's Vision- My favorite star texture which makes the night sky so darn cool to look at.

 

Gut Fix - Guards and Stormcloak Armor- Pretty self explanatory. It gets rid of the beer belly.

 

Pants For Imperial Heavy Armor ----Male Only- Because not everyone wants to wear a kilt. >.<

Most of my mods are various weapons/armor, followers, races, a few homes and a couple of quests and dungeons.

 

The mods I absolutely can't live without, however, are:

 

Jump Higher: Because the vanilla jumping sucks and this mods makes getting around a lot easier.

 

Easy Lift Bodies and Objects: Because what's the point of killing people if you can't desecrate the corpses in hilarious ways?

 

Dragon Shout 5 Second Cooldown: Sets all dragon shout cooldowns to five seconds, because most of the vanilla cooldown times are bulls***.

 

Enchanting Freedom: Lets you put any armor enchantment on any piece of armor.

 

Saturation Boost: Makes the outdoors look less washed out.

 

Kagrenacs Instant Fortress: It's a house that you can place literally anywhere you want in the Tamriel worldspace, or just carry around in your inventory. A magic ring lets you teleport in and out of it from any outdoor place in the game. Perfect for when you exit a dungeon overencumbered by insane loot. Honestly, this is the only house mod I use these days.

Most of my mods are for better graphics and immersion. Can recommend most graphic mods from S.T.E.P.. Also have my own, very basic, ENB, mainly for shadow fixing. And Skyrim just isn't fun anymore without Frostfall, Realistic Needs and Diseases, and ARS Metallica smithing. (All the random sacks and barrels around Skyrim become worth searching and worthless loot isn't so worthless anymore.) Of course, SKSE, SkyUI, and the Unofficial Patches are must-haves.

I can recommend most any mods from S.T.E.P. It's excellent for beginners. Just know that you're not supposed to go through downloading everything, carefully deliberate what you do and don't want from it.

 

This is my list of mods I won't even bother running Skyrim without*:

 

• SkyUI - Changes the interface so it actually makes sense for a mouse and keyboard.
• Better Dialogue Controls - Less accidental selection of the wrong dialogue option.
• Better MessageBox Controls - Finally, being able to use a keyboard with message boxes.
• Project Optimization - It helps everything run smoother.
• A Quality World Map With Roads - Because where we're going, we actually do need roads.
• Audio Overhaul or Sounds of Skyrim - I actually switch between these depending on the mood I'm in. Both are fabulous. Audio Overhaul doesn't harass me with a million dialogue boxes when I start a new save, so when I'm playing around with new characters I usually choose that one.
• Alternative Start - No more five minute long cutscene that I usually just spend making a snack. It allows you to choose your own back story (even the default game one).
• Climates of Tamriel - Well rounded weather overhaul. There are others, if you want to be a rebel.

Besides those, there are the texture packs. Any of the top rated ones will do. aMidianBorn texture packs are some of the best (to be used with a major one like Skyrim 2K or Serious HD). Vivid Landscapes is another. In terms of miscellaneous mods, I'd recommend looking at the Skyrim Gems list and selecting what you personally prefer from there. My current favorite body texture is True Daughters of Skyrim. Check out the guy's other stuff, he (or she) has talent. My favorite immersion mod, believe it or not, is Fire Hurts. It's such a small thing... but now I have something stopping me from doing jumping jacks in the local tavern fire pit. Prince and the Pauper is another good one. One I have just started experimenting with is Simple Crosshair. It makes the crosshair far less distracting while still keeping it useful. I'm sure there are plenty more I could recommend, but GEMs and S.T.E.P. will be enough to overwhelm you already.

 

*I actually won't run the game without a lot more mods than listed, but those are the ones that won't destroy your computer's performance.
