NATO rounds are just rounds designed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to help allied countries use the same ammunition so that supplies are not as hard to come by and that JSF (Joint Strike Forces) can share ammo in the field with little to no problems. There are a few countries that don't and wont adhere to NATO ammunition regulation like Russia & China. Then there are SPR (Special Propose Rifles) that are an exception to the NATO rule as they are either in testing (Field), strictly civilian, or custom made. Para-Military & Special Operations Forces have an exception to the NATO regulation as well, as they usually work alone covertly and require the use of SPR's, most field testing is done through Para-Military or Special Operations before it is finally officially fielded by an armed forces branch.

7.62x51mm NATO is a .308 Winchester round.
5.56x45mm NATO is a .223 Remington round.
The only difference between the caliber designations is that they are either Imperially read or Metrically read.

.223 Remington is similar in dimensions to the 5.56x45mm NATO but they are not the same round. The 5.56x45mm NATO round is loaded to higher pressures than the .223 Remington round. It has a different internal structure to .223 Remington to take the extra load. You can use .223 Remington in rifles chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO, but you cannot use 5.56x45mm NATO in rifles chambered for .223 Remington. Unless you want you gun to explode in your face. Some rifles that are officially said to be chambered for .223 Remington can can take the 5.56x45mm NATO round, these tend to be the semi-auto versions of the military service rifles such as M16 or M4 pattern weapons.

you are correct on the .223 remington vs 5.56x45mm NATO on the +p+ designation of the round, my apologies on that. The reason for that is its used for military purposes, I am speaking from experience as I have yet to have a problem firing a .223 rem in a 5.56mm M4/16 or a 5.56mm in a "AR"16 (civilian version).
