General Hostility towards Moderators-A discussion towards enlightenmen

I am incredibly confused as to the entitlement issues of these people; they go on and on about the staff being overbearing, "walking on eggshells", the three strike suggestion not being enforced, etc.

Do they not understand that the staff consists of volunteers? The staff works at discretion, the three strikes are not tracked (to my knowledge) by the site, requiring the formal warnings, but this in itself does not require the use of three strikes. Certain offenses would become a liability for the Nexus, ala piracy; no three strikes required to ban someone for that.

I've read petitions on sites calling for a mass exodus from the nexus, and I have to ask myself why? What would be the point other than to hurt Robins livelyhood. Here we are, on a free site, that has worked its way up from a small niche file hosting website, to the defacto ruler of the the modding community. People enjoy it here, it is a nice place to be, and calling for an exodus is beyond idiocy really.

Is it the staff? I don't believe so, as I stated in my OP, I've broken just about every rule here, I have made an effort to be a part of the community, and to do my best to streamline the jobs of the staff to reduce the stress. I have never been reprimanded, and I have had multiple discussions via PM with a large portion of the staff.

My issue is the statements these people are making, such as the requirement of walking on eggshells when posting in the forums. Do I believe this? Not one bit; in fact, I've sworn up and down these halls, when I was younger, I even berated people and called them foolish, immature, and stupid in the requests forums. Does that sound like a good user to you? It doesn't to me. But making an effort to become a part of the community does wonders...

In fact, a thought just occurred to me. What is the possibility, that the majority of these self entitled users, are those who simply download mods, and only take part in the communal aspect of the site, when they perform the offenses they were banned for?

the three strike suggestion not being enforced,

The 3 strikes was replaced over 2 years ago. It also never applied to piracy, mod theft, porn, and a few other offenses. How they whine and demand we allow them to break rules because they don't like them. And when they get banned instead of the strike they expected.

We also get a lot of kiddies who are probably used to kiddie game sites that expect the Nexus to be just like the local small time gamer site run by other kiddies that don't just allow piracy and other illegal acts but encourage it. Then they expect that - again just like their kiddie sites - the moderators to look the other way when they make a new account after being banned. Many more would be allowed back after an apology and showing that they have read and understand the rules if they did not insist on their right to break another rule by making a new account right away. On many I would even forgo the apology if they could show an understanding of the rules.

We ban a lot in chat - and just to enter chat, you are shown a very short list of some of the rules EVERY TIME you enter. And you must agree to the rules before being allowed to proceed - then when they are banned they actually say they never read the rules, http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f351/charonn0/ohgeez-1.gifso, because they didn't know that flaming, spamming and acting like a jerk would get them banned won't we pretty please allow them back. They just don't understand that there are consequences for actions. And it is far better to learn that on a game site than in real life where those consequences may be far worse than a ban.

Our rules are really not that complicated. But over the years the jerks that want to play forum lawyer and split hairs have forced us to add 'clarifications' to the basic rules

I think a lot of it comes from this sense of entitlement an alarming number of people seem to have these days, not only do they feel entitled to mods but also to act like arsehats. The moderation does look a little harsh but it's that moderation that allows people to express themselves and be creative without having to put up with morons who think the whole internet should resemble the Youtube comments section. Anyway if you actually look at the bans board it's mostly pirates, spammers and those who choose to make a new account instead of appealing a ban on their first one, yes mistakes are made and there are some bad judgement calls but the staff are human (mostly ) and won't always get everything right.

On my trip through the google, I came across one of those open letters to nexus staff, claiming that the nexus itself is in violation of copyright laws and such. The same blog entry detailed how someone was banned for trolling a file comment thread, and that there was nothing in the nexus rules saying no trolling. I read the linked screenshot, and indeed, the word "troll" is not mentioned (they highlighted the parts about changing rules without notice and moderators having the ability to enforce arbitrary rules)... HOWEVER this here (which is what the ban fell under, for trolling) was NOT highlighted.

Through your use of any Nexus site you agree that you will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, threatening, related to piracy, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of UK law. Know that in severe cases legal action can be taken against you.

They went on to claim that per the CK terms of use, authors have no copyright, and copy/pasted the relevant paragraph... which reads something like: By using this, any work you do CAN BE USED BY Bethesda for ANY REASON (paraphrased, obviously) -- essentially giving them unlimited rights to your work. That still doesn't take away your own right of copyright, it simply gives Bethesda (and ONLY Bethesda) rights to use whatever you make.

They proceeded to threatening legal action.

All I want to know is, what rock did these people crawl out from under, and why hasn't someone bashed their head in with it yet?

If these kiddies don't care that they pirate material from developers or troll on people, and yet they care if Nexus is doing something wrong...... how hypocritical. They're threatening legal action for something Nexus did wrong without looking at themselves first

Yeah, I've seen the same being said for other gaming communities, no one went through with it. It's all a bunch of garbage. Anyone can threaten to take legal action. Whether they go through further with it....... yeah, that's an entirely different game. A game these kiddies never win.

That always makes me smile, what exactly are they going to take action over?

Banned Person: I'm going to take legal action.

Normal Person: On what grounds will you base this legal action?

Banned Person: ................ Shut up.

Typically when people threaten me with legal action I inform them I shall no longer say a single word to them and will instead wait to converse through their lawyers and my lawyers as a communication medium, at which point they get upset that I'm no longer talking to them and demand a direct response. Of course, I don't respond. Come to think of it I'm yet to hear from quite a few people's lawyers.
