I take it this was the first attempt to launch EU after applying the downgrade mod?  (I assume you made multiple attempts which all produced nothing except possibly for a quickly vanishing DOS command line window.)

How are you trying to launch the game?  Isn't that covered in the instructions file?  If you are using an old shortcut, that may need to be updated or recreated.

Have you checked the EU Version.txt file to see if it is showing the correct patch level?

What did the mod's LogFile.txt say?

Have you followed the advice in the wiki articles: 'Installing Games on Windows Vista+' and 'Steam and mods'?

Otherwise, without any detail to work with there isn't much we can offer except to suggest you try again following the steps detailed 'here' or in the video 'here'.

Thank you for your fast reply

ok i reinstalled the game and did it again step for step like showen in the video. but same result: i am at step 10 where i should restart the game for the first time after the downgrade. i tried to start the game directly from steam with the window where i can choose betwenn EU and EW. there is a process in the task manager and im in the game says the friend list. the game creates a folder in my "my games" folder but there is only a binaries and a xcomgame folder no engine folder. and the Launch document in the logs folder is empty. the Logfile from the downgrade folder shows no error message.

I hope this will help you to find the proplem.

Thanks for the help.

Where do you have Steam and Xcom installed?

The "My Games" folder only has "personal" files, such as your save games.  If you haven't already, please read the wiki article "Basic Guide to Modding".  It covers things like where the game is installed.  I know it is lengthy, but you have to understand that this is a "mod unfriendly" game and there is a lot we have to do to get them to work at all.

I suggest you search through this thread for "step 10".  There have been a number of people who have had problems at that step.  Perhaps one of them hit upon a solution you can try until I get back to you.

Please understand, I am not the author, who hasn't been heard from for a couple of months.  I have no special insights beyond a couple of decades troubleshooting computer problems.  Primarily I am just spitting back out things others have found that are buried back in multiple threads.

My game + steam is installed on my primary harddrive but not in the programm files folder.

I tried everything today. things said in this thread and in the wikis but nothing changed. The game wont start after the downgrade. there is a process open in the task manager but nothing happens, no icon in the task bar, no flashing black screen, just nothing...

I think i am supposed to play the vanilla Xcom and only watch other people playing Long War.

Thank you very much for your help i appreciate that.

greetings

this doesn't seem to be working for me. whenever I start the xcom after completing the install it black screens then returns to desktop.

"Black screen" that returns to the desktop sounds like there should be a Windows error report.

Windows error messages only superficially look like they are saying 'the usual'.  The details in the lower, large box are what are significant and do matter.

Typically a game or utility related error will be reported by the Operating System (OS) as an 'Event 1000, Application Error'.  These are found in the 'Adminstrative Tools | Event Viewer' tool under your 'Start' button | 'All Programs' folder.  Search online for 'windows event viewer' for more version specific details.  Note some elements are only visible when you are logged in with an Administrator privilege account.  Look in the 'Windows Logs | Application' section of the 'Event Viewer'.  If not found under the 'Application' section, look under the 'System' section.

In particular the following details are of significance in these circumstances:
'Faulting application:' (probably '<game>.exe, version: <some numbers>, time stamp: <something>')
'Faulting module name:' (very significant, the actual component source (plugin) of the error)
'Exception code:'       (exactly what type of error)
'Fault offset:'         (where in the faulting module the error occurred)

If any of the remaining lines of information seem pertinent, they should be given as well.  In fact, the preferred method of conveying this information is a screenshot, but at least list the above data.

In response to post #13775853.

I have exactly this very same problem. No error messages.. nothing. There is something running in the task manager but nothing happens on the screen. I am very certain that I did everything what was asked in the installer, since I used a lot of time checking again and again deleting and re-installing the game in the process to provide fresh start.

@Askic: With Win 7 and later (possibly with Vista, but not sure) you may need to boot into "Safe" mode and definitely need to be using an Admin account.  "hosts" is a protected system file.

@BoltedBandit:  Without anything to go on, not much we can do to help.  Have you checked the Windows Event log for any "Application" or "System" error messages?  Do you have the game installed outside of the "C:\Program Files" tree?  Does the game work with any other mods?

Yes. I try to keep all my data in D disk instead of using C since it fills up way too quickly.

So my Steam common files are located in:
D:Games/Steam/SteamApps/common

I havent tried any other mods since I'm trying to get the Long War mod to function with vanilla, which requires this downgrade.
