Yes. I try to keep all my data in D disk instead of using C since it fills up way too quickly.

So my Steam common files are located in:
D:Games/Steam/SteamApps/common

I havent tried any other mods since I'm trying to get the Long War mod to function with vanilla, which requires this downgrade.

That's good, but still not enough to do much with.  Simply eliminates one very common problem.  No Windows Eventlog error messages?

Have you run EU at all before attempting to downgrade?  You might try just the tutorial or very first mission, just enough to confirm all is working before attempting the downgrade.  (No need to complete or save.)  That is an unspoken assumption in the instructions.  After that be sure to follow the steps carefully, including launching the game TWICE (and waiting between attempts for it to fully close all background processes) after verifying files to revert to vanilla.  Failure to wait long enough between attempts to launch the game can cause it to appear to hang.  There are actually two "file verification" steps which is why you need to run the game (to at least the main menu) twice before attempting the downgrade itself.

While you may have done all of these things, simply saying "I followed all instructions" means to us that you believe you followed all instructions.  But either the instructions (and which instructions: from the download or from this post?) are missing a step, or you missed or misinterpreted one.  (This video might also help clarify some things.)  Since things aren't working and with nothing to point to a cause, we have to revert to verifying each step.  We start with the most common errors, and if none of that is the case then we have to walk through the instructions step-by-step to see which is not correct.

If you can't get it going or turn up some error message, then post (in spoiler tags) each step you take and the result at each stage.  Details are important so give full paths and filenames, etc.

Thank you for all these instructions you've given me so far Dubious. Since I couldn't find what I did wrong here I decided that maybe it is worth it to buy Enemy Within expansion pack and downloud Long War EW Beta 6 for it. Works perfectly now in EW but thank you for providing me support even if I didn't realize to give you all the technical details of my installing process.

Well, the goal is to get you up and playing, so whatever works.  Glad EW and LW are working well for you.

When I get to step 8 of the downgrade I get the pop up that says bspatch.exe wants to change stuff on my computer, but when I click yes it just keeps popping up and not doing anything. I've had to go through the whole process three times now and I'm apocalyptically pissed off. Can anyone help me?

Second question: If anyone here happens to know, does the Xcom Long War mod beta 7 work with the updated patches?

Where do you have Steam installed? Sounds like you haven't moved it out of the "C:\Program Files" tree. Read "Installing Games on Vista+" for how and why.  Otherwise turn off your Antivirus while that process runs, and do it from an "administrator" account.

As noone has a "rollback" method for any ealier versions of EW, it is current with EW patch 3. But that LW beta 7 is ONLY for EW. They won't update the EU version until the EW version is released as stable.  With EU "downgraded|" back to patch 4, you can play LW v2.1.2.

This won't install.

I keep getting an error saying that the XcomGame.exe file doesn't exist.

Is the game installed OUTSIDE of the "C:\Program Files" folder tree(s) in accordance with the article "Installing Games on Windows Vista+"?

Did you check that you are installing the downgrade mod in the correct folder (i.e. \Steam\steamapps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown\XComGame\) and not (\Steam\steamapps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown\XEW\XComGame\)?

I am having the same problem as adamhunter had where the MS Security popup asking if I want the patcher to change stuff in my computer is ok, even though I have clicked yes several times. My game is on another hard drive, specifically D:SteamLibrarySteamAppscommonXCom-Enemy-Unknown. Any clue as to how I could fix this?

As I recall, this mod installer uses the registry to determine the game install path.  You should not be seeing the UAC prompt unless the installer is trying to access a protected folder (such as "C:\Program Files").  (The same folder name on another drive is not "protected".)  So did you uninstall Steam from C: before moving the game to your "other drive", or did you just copy it?  You need to ensure the registry entry only points to the "other drive".

I know this issue came up with the Long War mod, and they have special install instructions for people who have Steam in the default location but XCOM on another drive.  You might download that mod and read their install instructions to see how they dealt with it.
