Dubiousintent (because he advises a lot), and everyone having problems

I also had issues until about 2 hours ago.

1: I did need to disable the user account control in order to get the pop ups to go away while trying to update the files with the installer. After that everything installed as it was supposed to.

2: On step 10, when it says to run the game again, I also had the issue of the game not running and if I tried again it would tell me app already running. I had to go into processes and stop it in order to restart it. It was not listed in basic task-manager list of like 4 things, but in the actual processes where there is like 20-30 random things windows runs it seems. Just like what one of the previous people stated, I did have to stop and restart it I think 3 times before it worked.

After this was all said and done, I was able to reactivate my account control, and the game runs perfectly. No further problems.

I wish you all the best, and dubious, thanks for all your answers and I hope you see this and my personal experiences will help others in the future with trouble shooting.

Thanks, that is very helpful to know.

UAC simply pops up whenever an install is writing to a 'system protected area' of the disk (or whenever some 'Admin restricted' action is attempted).  This includes all of the 'C:\Program Files' folder trees, and some other areas.  You can avoid UAC popups by right-clicking on an install program and selecting "Run as Administrator" when launching.  Once you select an "Admin" account and give it the correct password, the install program (and any sub-processes it spins off) will run with the permissions of that "Admin" account.  No further UAC popups, but it remains active against everything else.  (This is a "good" thing.  Sometimes annoying, but needed.)

Note that when you are installing "as Admin", new programs see the Admin account you gave the password for as the "current user".  This can result in the program's "personal" data files being placed under that Admin account's "My Documents" folder.  You may need to use that Admin account to copy them over to the "My Documents" folder of the account you normally use to run the program.  This should not be necessary when installing mods.

"App already running" usually means you have been too quick to restart after exiting the game (which they do not expect).  Most programs return control to the user as quickly as possible, but still are in the process of shutting down 'background processes' that only appear in the Task Manager, and even then might not appear unless you enable the 'show processes from all users' button at the bottom-left of that window.  How long that takes varies, but as long as the app name remains in the Task Manager "Applications" window, some part of it is still running.  The preferred way to shut down ALL the related "sticky" processes is from the "Applications" tab of the Task Manager, but if you have to select a process in the "Processes" tab, right-click on it and select "End Process Tree".  That will try to identify and stop any and all related processes.

In response to post #11546354.

In Xcomdown's case it isn't possible to run the installprocess as admin. At least, you don't get the option upon rightclicking the .bsv file.

So the only option I know of is to shut off UAC as written further down the thread, then put it back up after install finishes.

Then again, I'm no comp wiz so it may be perfectly possible to more experienced users.

Create a shortcut to "wscript.exe", with the VBS script as the
argument. The shortcut will then have the "Run as administrator" option.

The preferred solution would be for the author (Bertilsson) to update his script with something along the following lines:

<pre>
If Not WScript.Arguments.Named.Exists("elevate") Then
  CreateObject("Shell.Application").ShellExecute WScript.FullName _
    , WScript.ScriptFullName & " /elevate", "", "runas", 1
  WScript.Quit
End If
</pre>

Most likely you have Steam installed in the default location of "C:\Program Files".  Read 'Installing Games on Windows Vista+' and move your Steam folder.  It may seem like a hassle, but it will save you a lot of grief down the road and it's never going to get any easier to do than now.
