I would love to choose what class my rookies are promoted to when they reach Squadie level, instead of being at the mercy of the game to fill necessary personnel spots.  Is this possible?

The closest thing currently available is this:

It allows you to select % probability for each class and to select maximum number in barracks for each class.

 

For example I will start my next game with the following settings:

40% Assault

20% Support

20% Sniper

20% Heavy

Max 2 Support

Max 2 Heavy

Max 2 Sniper

Max 255 Assault

 

Somewhere around the time when I get OTS Will upgrade I will save the game, increase the cap from 2 to 4 and continue playing or possibly just sack the least useful soldier of each class to leave room for a rookie to fill that spot.

 

The original idea was to implement exactly what you are asking for, but after I failed that and did countless experiment on alternative ways of reaching the same goal, I have ultimately found that this is really closer to what I want, as it is close to how I would have selected, given the chance to do so. Except now I don't have to do it manually.
