Except for Morag Tong, I rule all guilds and factions plus House Telvanni, so I can't choose any one; it would show favouritism and could end an uneasy peace. They all have their good points and bad.

Wrong! They are an interesting company. Don't know abou t other houses but Duke is Hlaalu and for killing his own brother he makes you grandfather of the house. That's kinda cool attitude to poor outlander, isn't it!how come no one like Hallau, i like the fact the trade in ebony and are sort of Mob like in the fact they, "influance" shop keepers to sell there product. And they also have the best arcetecture in the game.
Mage's guild is OK, too - quests are not complicated for a beginner and rewards are good.
Fighters. At first they seem allright but as you gain levels strange things start to appear (example: kill Imperial tax collector!?). Talk to people and it all come's into open - they have sold their @$$es to Comonna Tong. Fee!
In simple words - for a first-time gamer it's OK to join everything you can join in Balmora. Later in the game you will see who's who and establish your own opinion

House Telvanni is a sure winner for me.

I chose HT for the excellent rewards on completeing the quests. My stronghold sits, unvisited (save for once only) in the middle of nowhere - I could care less.House Telvanni is a sure winner for me.

I joined house hlaalu although I see now that my fighter-type char should have joined redoran

Don't worry House Hlaalu is pretty flexible, I progressed to Archmaster with my fighter, they need enforcers and muscle for some of their devious undertakings.

I see no one says anything about the fighters guild. They rule! If you are a fighter like me, then you must be a member of the fighters guild.

Yeah the fighters guild are pretty cool, really good missions. But I personally think that HT are the best. I also think they have the best buldings and scenery as well as having cool missions and a really nice stronghold.

Think it all depends on your character. Joined everything with my first character and house redoran (as a fighter), except the Morag Tong (don't fancy the idea of doing all that killing, but may join later).
With my other characters I have always joined fighters/mages/theives and temple while in Balmora.
Fighters/Mages/Theives all have nice simple quests to startr, some are char approiate, some aren't but does give me a few quests to get on with. May not advance all the way in those guilds though.
Also do Blades for main quest and Temple because I like the religious type and well how can you turn down Ebony Mail?
Other than that will wait and see, may just stick with those for some characters.

i don't think the mage's guild is that lame. i like the quest that says, "Go get this guy to join us. if he doesn't, kill him. oh, and pick up that guy's late dues. if he doesn't pay, kill him." that's cool. i'm trying to find the morag tong for my monk, but Vivec is so freakin confusing. <_<
