I consider this cheating....
If you are completely stumpted, using the editor can help. just right click on the ID of the item, weapon, clothing, armor, creature, NPC, key, etc. and select INFO. It will list What cells the item appears in, what NPC's have it, or which containers have it. Same way to find where a certain NPC is at.
This is limited to the ones that are placed at the start of the game, stuff that is obtained through dialoge and quest and scripts, won't be listed. And if an NPC moves location for a quest it will only show where they start out, you'll have to disect the quest to find em...But you should be able to figure it out with your journal...( i knew i should have read that dialoge LOL)
And there are many random and leveled items also.
To really cheat.... Go open the cell with the item or NPC in it, it will render, then doubleclick the ID in the Cell window, it will move to that item, sometimes a wall or something might be in the way..

It isn't necessarily cheating, it depends how you use it. For instance, I COULD NOT find the Dagoth Ur door crank, until I looked in the CS. Using it for, say, finding where Daedric armor is lying around, though, probably would count. (I still have no clue where to find the other pauldron)

hehe, I had the same problem with not finding the crank but I was on the XBox version. Finally somebody had took a screenshot and highlighted where it was.
I use the cs to sometimes fix mods that are not working proprely. like lgnpc pelagiad, I still cant pass when you have to put on the 'new shirt' and 'shout the store slogan'
