I've been battling for months to get the game working with the 200 or so mods I consider essential and I can't do it anymore! I've included as much detail as possible, please help!

The game runs for a few minutes, then crashes to desktop either immediately after loading or in the middle of wandering around. I rarely get any stutter and usually run at 60fps.

I use Mod Organizer, and Wrye Bash for bash patches.

I run SKSE, Wrye Bash, Dual Sheath Redux etc all out of the Mod Organizer. I have a different 'test' profile where I trimmed the fat down to 140 mods and had the same issues. I have no idea how to do TES5Edit cleaning. Also worth mentioning I am trying getting these issues with completely fresh saves - any time I change anything I restart and will continue to do so until I get these issues resolved.
If there is any more info I can provide, please tell me! I love Skyrim to pieces and this is tearing me apart. :C

Thank you to anybody that takes a look,
Andy

It is REALLY difficult to help in this situation; many mods already installed, no idea when the problem started (after a particular mod was installed), no idea if you have trouble with vanilla Skyrim, etc.

You do use some good tools, but, as a first step, you NEED to clean the mods with TES5EDIT which BOSS says to clean. Those warnings are in BOSS for good reasons (deleted references, flagged as UDR, can cause CTD's). Gopher has a good video to get you started.

MO has a profile ability to let you run different mod setups. I don't use MO so I don't know the details, but I would first try a new profile (watch out for your current savegames!) with default ini files and ONLY vanilla Skyrim, cleaned DLC, Unofficial patches, SKSE, and your ENB. I would also add SSME ( or use the patched SKSE ) to implement Sheson's memory fix. Once your basic setup is running okay, then I would add cleaned mods IN YOUR CURRENT LOAD ORDER sequence (if possible) to the new profile, run BOSS, generate a new bashed patch if necessary, and test. If its a large mod, just add it by itself. Add just a few mods at a time (one at a time is ideal) and test your game after each addition so you can tell what might be causing a problem. Slowly work your new profile up to your desired mod load. It may take a while, but you've spent months trying to fix your old setup. A little time now will be time well spent. Make sure your mods are updated and that you have the correct compatibility patches as well.

As you have discovered, modding Skyrim is not as simple as it may seem. But, if you follow mod author instructions, use BOSS, BASH, and TES5EDIT, implement the Skyrim Memory fixes (ENB and Sheson's patch), and test while adding mods, you can have a very complex Skyrim setup which runs very reliably. I've had 6 or 7 CTD's in months of playing, and fixed every one by following the above process. Good luck.

EDIT: I've been told that MO can run all the third party tools (BOSS, BASH, TES5EDIT) from within MO. I guess the ideal process would start with a pristine vanilla Skyrim installation and add, clean, BASH, and sort ALL mods via MO. I "believe" you still have to add SKSE, ENBseries, and SSME manually as they go in the Skyrim directory and MO won't add those programs by itself. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I've had great success using a combination of these (ALL of these, in this order):

ClearInvalidRegistrations (requires SKSE)

This S.T.E.P. guide

Savegame Cleaner

This guide (read the sticky in the comments too!)

Try those if doing what Lord Garon recommends isn't working for you. But yeah, TES5EDIT cleaning is very important. Seriously just do what BOSS tells you to do. Here's the video and the tutorial

I feel your pain, by the way. It can be a real blow to lose so many hours of play. Hope one of these works. Out of curiosity, how big are your latest save files?

Are you using Sheson's memory hack?

Thanks for the awesomely overwhelming responses guys! Looks like I'll be spending the rest of the day (it's 10AM here in Australia) working through it and getting it functional. I will post back as soon as I have some results!

Just as a side-question, isn't a little irresponsible for mod authors to upload mods that haven't been cleaned? Or am I just talking out of my butt?

OKAY so I just followed the guides in the TES5Edit Mod Cleaning Tutorial on the Creation Kit site and cleaned up Update.esm, following all the steps it gave me to the letter. Upon booting up BOSS and running it, no more dirty edits notification on the update! Yay! However, I am still getting;

  • Bash Tag suggestion(s): {{BASH: Delev, Relev}}

Is this an issue?

Nevermind! Did some research on the bash tag suggestion, now know it's just to help out wrye bash for bash patches. :)

As far as I know it's best practice to clean your own mods, but some authors simply don't know they should, or the mods were created before changes were made to the construction kit or the game itself, or before TES5EDIT was out. From what I understand there's a lot of ways a dirty edit might slip through the cracks without any malice or laziness on the part of the authors.

And yes, you can ignore those bash tag suggestions.
