so i was thinking with all of the latest hubub about ES IV and its apparent planning that when and if it is released what do you think the fate of Morrowind will be?

i personally think that as a game Morrowind will always be incredibly strong even when the industry standards (as far as graphics etc etc) are improved upon. Where will morrowind end up? probably still on my harddrive, i can't see myself ever giving up on this game simply because the next new 3d engine comes out. Certainly we can expect that Bethseda will amaze us with what they have planned but will what they have already done continue to be strong as we progress in the gaming world.

your thoughts please.

I think morrowind isn't in much danger of disappearing any time soon. What keeps it going is the strength of the mod community. I mean, honestly... how many of you would be playing as long with just the standard game. So as long as we keep making new content, the game will still be around. Personally, I'm willing to overlook minor problems like the aging graphics engine, as long as the gameplay/story is still there.
But, assuming ESIV continues all of what Morrowind so good, eventually Morrowind will die. If the improvements are significant enough, I imagine most of the mod efforts will shift to ESIV. Eventually, morrowind will drop into the background, except for the occasional game to relive old memories.

Like Peregrine said, I think morrowind will forever expand and people will still be playing it. just look at counterstrike. the graphics are extremely old, but people still play because people still make mods. These kind of games will never die, until we do :P

true, i mean just look at Counter Strike, the graphics are from the later mid 90's and it's still played constantly (for the wrong reasons, counter strike sucks it majorly). but it certainly hasn't lost much staying power. i'm only praying that unreal 2 will rain judgement day on the counter strike 12 year olds and get the to realize THAT GAME SUCKS.

as for morrowind i still occassionaly pull some title out of a box, dust it off and fire it up. most recently i did this with FFVII and that game still impresses me, sometimes even moreso than X. SNES games like super mario world, FF III, super metroid and mario cart still get fired up occassionally. all of these games are just simple fun. Morrowind is a but more detailed but it's that detail which i think will keep people interested in expanding the game through and through. but yea all good things come to an end eventually, but will the birth of ES IV really spell doom for Morrowind. Methinks it will be a rather slow transition if at all.

Depends on how much better it is. It also depends on the system requirements. Unreal Tournament 1 for example, still gets played by lots of people with low-end PCs.

What matters most is if they include the editor with the game like they did with Morrowind. If they don't, a lot of people are going to stick with just Morrowind.

like people have been saying, morrowind will still be around, pretty much forever. there are always mods to be tried, and new characters as well. so i will keep it on my computer forever (or as close to that as possible).

I agree with Shakkara. a lot is going to depend on the system requirements. If it requires a 3.0 ghz P4 and a top of the line card, a lot of people (including me with my dusty old Geforce II and low end Pentium 4 :( ) will be playing morrowind for a very long time.

I believe if morrowind was supplied with a multiplayer like freelancer has the game would last for years. However i do believe teh game is not quite finished.
We have a lot to explore and all but honestly when you get the title of some faction leader.... it just ends. No commanding your followers or anuthing, its over and the title doesnt really brings much profits along does it. And another thing... Such a huge world and still most of the time you feel lonely. At least there should be the possibillyty that you have a wife/husband wiating for ya that you have other options than just hack'n slash like farming. With much more addons this game would become invincible... Bethesda did a great job but could have done so much more and I must say that I'm disappointed about tribunal. Except the ebony scimitars i didnt get much pleasure of the game and defenitly not from the main quest...
