So, the internet's pestered with folks who have problems with Steam failing to fix flawed files. The "1 file failed to validate" error is everywhere (seemingly with other games as well as Skyrim). A few are solved, mostly by re-installing Steam, Skyrim, or both, but many are not. Lots of old posts, and that freaks me out, so now I'm here rather than continuing to stab in the dark what might be wrong.

I'd been playing a bit over a week, slowly adding mods, and everything was working fine. I had it up to "High" graphics, and I had no hiccups. Heck, even my load screens aren't long enough to read the tips. Then it crashed (coming from Breezehome into Whiterun).  From then on, when I start the game, and hit continue, or loaded the previous save, it got hung up as the "confirm" screen began to fade. What I did not do at this time, which was foolish, is load older saves, but I'll get back to that.

What I did do:

First I uninstalled the newest mods (I had recently added four or so).

Then I uninstalled all the mods.

Then I started from the actual .exe, not the shortcut.

Updated graphics driver, tried several different ones

Tried to validate the game files from within Steam. Gave me the message that it failed to validate the one file, and that it would be re-downloaded but nothing ever happens.

Re-install Skyrim. Try the 'validate files' thing again. Same results.

Re-install Skyrim

Re-install Steam, and Skyrim again.

At which point, when testing, it occurs to me to try an older save. So I do, and voila! It works! Until I go outside, and then crash. Every time.

Which leaves me here. I don't know what else try.

Potentially relevant system specs:

Windows 7 32 bit

nVidia GeForce 9800 GT

Intel i5 3570

Its hard to help with your crashes without more information:

1. Can you post a BOSS log?

2. Do you have any mods NOT listed in the BOSS log?

3. Which mod manager do you use?

If you crash trying to exit Breezehome, try to get out using the console:

1. Open the console in-game (~ key)

2. Type the following in the console and hit enter: coc WhiterunWatchtowerExterior

If it works, you'll wind up at the Western Watchtower. Try to enter Whiterun again and see what happens.

Wow. I read through so very many threads. I tried several different recommendations that were supposed to "fix" this "problem." Doh.

So, first off, I do seem to have solved my constant crash problem. From http://www.nexusmods...rim/mods/4192/? I did just the  "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072 bit. I tried doing his skyrim.ini changes as well, but something went wrong when I tried to run BOSS, and it would no longer find my Skyrim install, but that was fixed by re-installing SKSE (again). At that point it was late and I went to bed.

I do fear that though I've fixed the immediate problem that perhaps in all my tinkering I've done more harm than good. That said, I also have fresh installs of bloody everything, several times over even...

So the game is now running so much worse than it was a few days ago. In fairness, I've added mods, and tweaked settings, and I may be running too much towards the "pretty" end. I also only played for twenty minutes or so after I got it working again. Really did seem noticeably choppier, and load screens sometimes hang up just a bit before they start. So, in the interest of always being thrilled to accept relevant and meaningful free advice...

I'm using the Nexus Mod Manager, BOSS, and SKSE. I do have other mods downloaded that are not installed. In particular, there's a water mod that is not represented in the links above, as I'm always suspicious of water mods (NWN and nVidia weren't pals), so it was one of the early ones I dropped. There are, of course, others I'd like to add as well...

Alrighty... We need to get Skyrim working normally.

First: Incredibly BAD advice on the mod page you linked. I'm not sure what the boot edit did for Windows 7; its an old XP hack. The Papyrus settings will CAUSE more problems for you. Setting ugrids to 7 can also CAUSE more problems, especially with an older graphics card. WARNING: if you already set ugrids to 7, you won't be able to load any savegames made after that change with the vanilla ini files I'm going to recommend.

Please reset your ini files to vanilla, either by editing them, or just deleting them and running the Skyrim launcher or running Skyrim from Steam (the launcher will re-create Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini). I know you use SKSE, just quit out of the launcher after it detects your video settings.

With new ini files, fire up Skyrim via SKSE as you normally would. For testing, a NEW game would be ideal. To skip the intro (Helgen), don't select New or Load at the load screen, instead, open the console (~ key), and enter the following:

coc riverwood

Hit Enter. You'll wind up in Riverwood with a "default" character. Just check things out; SkyUI works, notice any stutter or lag you have, etc. Make a New Save of this test game (you can make a named save from the console:  save testgame  ). Your load order looks okay and you don't have that many mods, but your graphics card is older and may not like the HiRes DLC. Try to load a savegame from earlier play (before changing ugrids, if you did). See if that game "behaves" like the test game. Let me know how all that works out.

Second: Have you set Skyrim (tesv.exe), SKSE (skse_loader.exe), NMM, BOSS, etc, to "Run As Administrator" via Properties-->Compatibility settings? What version of SKSE do you have? (in-game, hit the ESC key and look on the lower left of the menu)

There is a LOT of bad tweak advice for Skyrim out there, even on the Geforce and other well-known websites. If you don't know what it does to your game, please ask (like in these forums) before changing stuff; it will save you a LOT of grief.

This issue just started happening to me recently, all of a sudden out of the blue, files were not validating. Using Steams recommendations doesn't work. At the moment it only seems to be happening  to mods I have installed via Steam so I uninstalled them and installed the Nexus versions and that fixed it for me. I haven't installed mods via Steam, since I became a member of Nexus so that was an easy fix. I haven't had any issues with CTD though. The issue seems to be pretty old and I've not been able to find any real answers as to why this is occurring.

@ Lord Garon...nice post

You can revert any save game, back to default Ugrids of 5.  I did it after 30 hours of game play and it works...Google, and use the method described on the Nvidia site. basically you have to be able to alt/tab out of the game , make the change, save , then, back in the game you have to "Refresh ini" (this pulls in your edit) then make a new save. Works great.

Just don't do the "save INI" from inside the game, cause that will give you a monster INI, and your logo will turn RED...lol

Ok. Undid the system change I made from the linked page. Reverted to the base skyrim.ini. Set BOSS, NMM, SKSE, Steam, and Skyrim (TESV) to administrator access. Loaded via SKSE, tried "coc riverwood," started to load, and crashed.

Edit: And same results if I start from TESV.exe. Same results if I load a game.

Also, is it sufficient to set the properties of a shortcut to "administrator," or do I need to find the actual file? I have the shortcut to SKSE set to have administrator access, but I don't seem to have that option when I go to the actual .exe file in my Skyrim folder.
