I've been trying to create a female character, and obviously have run into a few snags. The bodies need some work, but I have had trouble finding a body mod that works with clothes and armor. Also, I have SO many problems with anything not in OMOD format, that it just isn't worth it to try unzipping a file. Modding is great, but I'm new to this. Any suggestions?

The latest version is 1.5. If GOTY doesn't come with 1.5, you'll need it.

Oblivion GOTY edition is already patched to the latest official patch.
You may want to download the Unofficial Oblivion Patch as it fixes some issues that the official patch missed. There's also the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch if you have Shivering Isles installed.
For the female body replacer mod, you may want to try HG EyeCandy Body and the armor replacer for it EVE HGEC Eyecandy Variants Expansion.

For the patches included in GOTY you must install the Shivering Isles part. If you do not wish to play SI yet, just ignore the message about a strange door that you will get. The message only appears once, and you can start the SI part at anytime after that by going to the portal.
