I hate leaving either of those families in charge of their province...so is there a way to bring down one or both?  (Crossing my fingers)

Sorry, but no... ...I would love to also, but can't.

I'm afraid there isn't anything you can do to the Blackbriars aside from trying to annoy them by stealing the horse and lying to Sibi about his ex-girlfriend. The most you can do about the Silverbloods is to see that Thonar dies after you get out of Cidhna Mine, which is a satisfying thing to do but doesn't really seem to change anything.

Technically no, nothing you do changes their visible influence over their respective holds.

But it depends how deep you go with the roleplaying. If you think about it, once you've restored the Thieves Guild to power and become the Guild Master, and then you've destroyed/become leader of the Dark Brotherhood, Maven Black-Briar really has very little power left. You can imagine you've told her to butt out of the Guild's business, and what's she gonna do - pay you to put a hit out on yourself?

I can imagine:

You tell her to but out of the TG then she performs the Black Sacrament. You show up and she says kill the Thieve's Guild Master. Remove your mask and say, LOL. :D

This is awful....I've gathered such gloriously satisfying blackmail material on Maven and Thonar, and have absolutely NO one  to show it to!

Not perfect, but:

1. Get the "heartbreaker" mod

2. Sneak up on them while they are alone.

3. Use the power from the mod to weaken them.

4. Rip out heart.

5. Find the other one another day and repeat.

Helps if you put up with them long enough to become thane - because then if the guards catch you - you can talk your way out of it.

Doesn't do anything story wise, but you can imagine that since they are gone someone else is running things.

Or just remove the "essential" flag from them in the CK. :s

A shame that Riften's Jarl is ruler in name only, though...
