Dungeons and Dragons: Paladin questions

This Saturday, I will start a Dungeons and Dragons (v. 3.5) with my friends and my character is a paladin.

I decided to start this topic for questions and I want some insight from others who played the class.

For now, I only have this question: which weapon would you recommend me?

More may come as my playthrough progress to either the end of the story or my paladin's death.

P.S.: I am not sure it's the right section since it's a tabletop game, but if it isn't, let me know where you move it.

I don't think we have a section for tabletop games... Even though we should darn it.

As for your question, sword and shield is always a safe option for a paladin unless the campaign is something where swords would be rare, or where you need to be more of a damage dealer than a tank. Mace, spear, axe are also perfectly viable options.

I'll be sure to get a backup weapon as well. If I am to pick a prestige class that isn't the blackguard, which one should I grab? And that's assuming that prestige classes will be included in the playthrough.

If your campaign has it, Divine Champion expands on a paladin's natural abilities quite well.

Backup weapon is usually something that happens through the course of your adventure... Just like pretty much anything else which might happen beyond the original starting options for a character.

Even though it's 3rd ed, I also wouldn't neglect non-combat skills, such as reading (common, elvish), speaking languages, bartering, courtly manners, and other skills that go well with the high charisma related to paladins, or any number of religious knowledge skills depending on what kind of world you're playing in. These can be almost as valuable as your combat skills.

If you're just simply not wanting to be in a situation where you would be without a weapon early on, daggers work very well as they are cheap, light weapons which can be wielded or thrown, and can also be lent to party members, used to wedge doors or mechanisms, ect without really needing a proficiency in them since they're simple weapons.
