I'm new to the DA toolset, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to create or edit classes and talents?
I have a lot of experience with Oblivion modding, but it seems that won't help me much here; the toolset is completely different.

You might try this tutorial at the Toolset Wiki. Be prepared to be frustrated, classes are a lot more of a headache with DA than in a TES game.

Okay, I've got another problem. Rather than creating a new class entirely I decided to create new talents. The problem is that this was the only tutorial I could find on that, and it constantly seems to skip little steps and fails to explain why you're doing the things it tells you to do (making it incredibly difficult to make anything other than the test spell the tutorial has you make).
The page on 2DAs that the tutorial directs you to seems to suffer from some of the same problems; right now I'm stuck on trying to convert the .xls into a .gda because the thing just says "open Microsoft Explorer" to start off, and I have no idea what that even is!
I need to know a few things;
Where can I find a better tutorial/guide?
If there isn't one, is this one even reliable and worthwhile?
And finally, if I'm stuck with that one, where/what is Microsoft Explorer?

Ha. I've got the exact opposite problem. I've got .GDAs, but I can't open em to begin with because I don't use Unix.The page on 2DAs that the tutorial directs you to seems to suffer from some of the same problems; right now I'm stuck on trying to convert the .xls into a .gda because the thing just says "open Microsoft Explorer" to start off, and I have no idea what that even is!
Ah, and Microsoft Explorer is Microsoft's file navigation program. That or Internet Explorer.

Let me know if you know of a way to convert them the other way (GDA -> XML)

I don't think you do convert them the other way. Someone on the official forums directed me to a mod on there called GDApp which can be used to open and edit GDAs in much the same way as any spreadsheet program.
As far as I can tell you don't even need a spreadsheet program for this once you have that. Just convert it into a GDA then open and edit it.

That would be handy. Thanks
Hope you get your problem fixed.

I need to know now how to open existing scripts in the toolset so I can copy and alter them for other talents (I'm not skilled enough yet with this game's scripting language to make them from scratch).
The official wiki has failed me in this again
I can only find explanations on how to make new scripts.
