Can't Install Long War Help!

Ok, I have followed the read me instruction to the letter serveral times. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Java and NET frame.

 

I purchased the Digital complete version of xcom which has both EU and EW and all the trimmings.

I keep getting the same error or crash every time reguardless of which verion of Long War I try to install.

 

When I try to open it after an install it says program has stopped working. There is no error code or anything. I am at a loss as to how or what could be causing this crash or how to fix it...please help!

Okay, while a little vague on details we get that you are having problems and have "tried everything". Unfortunately that implies things are all messed up as a result.

 

So, first of all, if you haven't read the "Basic Guide to installing mods" wiki article, do so now. In particular read and follow the instructions of the two linked articles in the "Environment" section: "Installing Games on Windows Vista+" and "Steam and Mods". They are fundamental to getting Long War to install correctly. You should only have to follow the steps in these two articles once.

 

Then have Steam "verify" your game files are back to vanilla.

 

Then run the vanilla games to the main menu at least twice, for both EU and EW so we know that the basic game works correctly and is fully patched. Be sure to pause between runs long enough for the game to completely shut down the background processes. About 30 seconds between runs should do it.

 

If you have any further problems installing LW, you will need to repeat the two steps above ("verify game files" and "run to main menu" twice) between each attempt.

 

Now this link is all about Long War issues. Once you are reading that thread, do a search within "this topic" for "install problems" to retrieve all the related posts about Long War. From them you should see that most problems rise from pointing the Long War version to the wrong game path. The differences in the EU and EW versions of Long War are critical and you have to use the correct version with the correct game path, which is covered in the "Basic Guide" wiki article. That should be all that is needed to get you up and running with it.

 

If you still have problems, follow the instructions provided with Long War on reporting bugs.

Ok, I will give you a run down on what I have done so far. Running windows 7 pro 64 bit version.

 

 

Essentially first couple of time I tried to install it I may have missed a step or two. After reading a lot of instructions I went for my next attempt

 

First - I uninstalled the Mod, IE: I went to control panel found the mod right clicked and uninstalled. If there was anything else I should have done I didnt know.

Second - I verfied the files on steam.

Third - I opened each verions of xcom twice. Letting it sit for a bit each time I went to the menu AND after I exited to the desktop.

Forth - I went into offline mode and then exited steam.

Fifth - I installed the mod, Long War 3 EW Beta 9a-88-3-0b9a

Sixth - I start steam in offline mode and open EW (note: if I open EU it runs fine but with no mod changes. Which I assume should be normal since Im trying for the EW mod anyway)

Seventh - It crashes, Says: Xcom EW has stopped working windows is searching for a solution. When it stops it give me a genaric paragraph about finding solutions etc.

Eighth - I wait for about 1 minute and I repeat try to open it again. 1 of 2 things happens. 1. A repeat of step seven. 2. Steam says completeing installation 0%. It never advances in that installation and says the servers cannot be found. Which is expected since its in offline mode. If #2 happens I will make a 3rd attempt to open EW

 

After reading some of the links you gave me. Most of which Im not fully understanding, but one thing had caught my attenion and that was installing steam in another folder away from Program files which I did not do before hand. Had no clue to do so. Thus I followed its instructions on doing so. Then repeated the above steps exactly and got the same results.

 

Added note when I verify files after each uninstal I am able to play the vanilla just fine.

Do you have an Anti-Virus program running? If so, disable it while installing mods (which, because they are modifying an executable file, look like malware). Otherwise you are following the process correctly and it should be working for you.

 

If Windows is still reporting the program stopped working, you have a controlled application failure, which means there should be an Eventlog entry.

 

Windows error messages only superficially look like they are saying 'the usual'. The details in the lower, large box are what are significant and do matter.

Typically a game or utility related error will be reported by the Operating System (OS) as an 'Event 1000, Application Error'. These are found in the 'Administrative Tools | Event Viewer' tool under your 'Start' button | 'All Programs' folder. (Search online for 'windows event viewer' for more version specific details if you can't find it easily.) Note some elements are only visible when you are logged in with an Administrator privilege account.

 

Look in the 'Windows Logs | Application' section of the 'Event Viewer'. If not found under the 'Application' section, look under the 'System' section.

In particular the following details are of significance in these circumstances:
'Faulting application:' (probably '<game>.exe, version: <some numbers>, time stamp: <something>')
'Faulting module name:' (very significant, the actual component source (plugin) of the error)
'Exception code:' (exactly what type of error)
'Fault offset:' (where in the faulting module the error occurred)

If any of the remaining lines of information seem pertinent, they should be given as well. In fact, the preferred method of conveying this information is a screenshot, but at least list the above data.

I disabled and uninstalled any virus scan as listed in the help thing.

Unfortunately, while helpful, "Exception code: 0xc0000005" from EventID 1000 "Application Error" is a pretty generic "invalid instruction" error with a lot of possible causes. EventID.net is a subscription service that has a database of such errors, and the publicly available list for this error can be seen here. One that appears pertinent is:

This may also occur if the application is not compatible with the operating system. For example, trying to run games designed for Windows 9x/ME on Windows 2000/XP.

I have the same OS as you and don't recall needing to set any compatibility mode for EU (never tried EW), but it can't hurt to try that.

 

If that doesn't fix it, you need to leave a post in the "LW Beta Feedback" thread linking them to this thread and adding the info they request for bug reports in their "ReadMe" file. It's pretty obvious there is something in that mod causing the problem, but as others are not having the issue, it's something peculiar to your setup. The "fault offset" location may help them pin it down.

Hi, I've recently also purchased Xcom EU and have had trouble installing the long war mod.

I have a similar problem where the long war installation abruptly says its stopped working also.

I've been experiencing the same problems. I just purchased Enemy Within, and when I go to start it up after installing Long war, it just says "X-com: Enemy Within has stopped working." No explanation whatsoever. I've looked through the forums and couldn't find any fixes that worked. I was hoping that the OP had found a solution. Of course any other help would be greatly appreciated.

Between this thread and the "Troubleshooting" instructions in the LW mod package there isn't anything else "in general" we can help with other than "try again". Some more specific details (such as which platform and OS you are using, and any Windows Eventlog entries or their equivalent) as to how it is failing will be needed.
