dalish mage origin dialogue fixes, and ZDF dilogue fixes

Recommended Posts

starting a new play through, and i'm doing my best to catch conflicts early. from what i can tell, the only conflicts that may arise (according to DAMM, and DirConflict tools) are the Dalish Mage origin dialogue fixes, and ZDF dialogue fixes. they both use cir230_cullen.dlb. has anyone else has dealt with these two enough to know whether they play nicely or not?

and if not, how crazy of an undertaking would it be to edit the file, such that they can work together, having never tried modding anything?

and how i could go about doing that?

DLB/DLG files (you should have both) are not directly editable once exported, so to create something that incorporates all the changes, you'd need to start from scratch in the toolset.

As to how well they will play together, as is... they won't. Having two conflicting files in override may cause neither of them to work. OTH, one may take precedence, negating the other. (ZDF would probably rule in that case, since it has a folder nomenclature beginning with "z". DAO behaviour can be... unpredictable. And for some reason, such things work in reverse alphabetical order in Thedas.)

tl; dr - You can't have both. Only you can decide which changes are more important to your playthrough and immersion - the consistant Dalish mage dialogue, or the fixes included in ZDF. /bad news

Should you opt for the Dalish files, you can omit the Cullen fix from ZDF without breaking anything. /good news-ish

I see. I think that would be the best option then, to omit the ZDF file. But neither tool showed a conflicting DLG file, which would mean the portion that references Cullen is housed within some other DLG file?

That being said, is there a way to figure out which lines each changes, to see which one is going to be more important?

DLG and DLB files almost always come in pairs; my quick review of both the Dalish mage fix and ZDF shows that both mods include both files (cir230_cullen.dlg/cir230_cullen.dlb). Why you aren't seeing both is a mystery to me, as I regret being entirely unfamiliar with the tools you are using.

The ZDF Cullen fix file includes a txt file describing the changes it makes:

This fixes the approval for Sten, the dialog triggers for Wynne, and the camera if Zevran makes his comment about a female mage. This also allows you to agree with Zevran if he tries to talk you out of killing the mages.

According to the Dalish mage fix ReadMe, the Cullen-related fix is:

Cullen isn't madly in love with you and doesn't think you're an apparition.

haha, that's my bad. i should have read the readme's, once you told me i had to pick one. i didn't even think to check to see if that information was there.

as for which tools i'm using, the first one is the DAO Mod Manager. ive seen lot's of acronyms for it, but maybe i'm using one that is incorrect. the second, is here: http://www.nexusmods.com/dragonage/mods/3928/?

when i was finished installing all of my intended mods (after turning them into .override files), i right clicked each of them, and then clicked check for "compatability". the only two that were not, as far as i could tell, were the 2 dialogue fixes. from there, i just compared the two parent folders, and it only showed me the one conflicting file. i didn't think i needed to spend time digging manually, if there was something that could do it for me. but, i guess i was wrong.

i really appreciate the help though!
