There are two chests in the Denerim Market that cannot be picked, requiring a key to open. Who has the key,or is it a red herring (considering they sparkle like we SHOULD be able to open them).

They belong to the Slim Couldry quest line. Crime wave, 3rd Mark (AKA pickpocket target)

Is he the guy who USED to be in town that I can't find anymore? Like, over by the chantry?

Probably, he has a habit of vanishing.

I haven't seen ol' Slim since the first time I entered the game. Now I strictly deal with the bartender, no Slim to be seen anywhere. Not sure what I installed to change that.

pretty sure it's a rogue questline, and/or possibly triggered by a stealth or high cunning rating or something. Can't be certain but I am currently working on my 4th and 5th playthrough of the game, and out of 5 characters that have been that far, he's only appeared for one of them, which happened to be my only rogue I played. The contents of the chests are un-remarkable though, as I played through that questline to the end and can't even remember what was inside them, lol

I think you only need party members with stealth/pickpocketing, hes always appeared for me.

Yeap, you are right. Slim would only appear if the main character have the pickpocket skill

You're right about the two chests. They are part of the Slim Cauldry quest line. One of his last quests in the pick pocketing stream. But the only time that he has shown up for me has been when I've played as a warrior. I usually play as a rogue (once as a mage), because of the need to get into chests early in the game. But my first game I was a warrior and my current game (about my 7th or 8th) I'm a warrior. These are the only two times I've seen 'ol Slim.
