Gotta say, I absolutely hated this game. I am glad I didn't fork out 60 dollars for it. I rented it.
Linear? Um, yeah... here is how it goes:
Cut scene, straight path, Cut scene, boss fight, Cut scene, switch characters scenarios, Cut scene, straight path, boss, repeat. And a few battles in between all that which most could be avoided. No quests at all, up until close to the end of the game, unfortunately I couldn't stand to play it that far in.
Not only that but for a console RPG, something like a retry feature is almost unheard of. I felt like I was playing a game on training wheels. Didn't like the battle system, the whole stagger gauge aspect, paradigm shifts, and am I the only one who though the summons were kinda useless? And the grid kinda reminded me of FFX. I didn't like FFXII either, but I thought it was better than XIII. FFXIII felt more like an interactive movie than a game.

Hmm, I ordered a copy of FFXIV before I heard all of this. I guess it sits on the shelf like X-2. Hopefully. that Crystallis Nova has a bit more depth. Or, it might be another Crystal Chronicals.
@Overload
I agree when you say that FFIX was the last of the 'Age of Final Fantasy', but I got addicted to thirteen quite well. My only qualms was that there were no 'airships' of any significant source for the player to control. I liked 13 mainly due to the fact that you had the option of switching the retarted main character out with one of the three better ones (Fran, Balthier, Basch FTW). Vaan was a little wuss, and Penelo never even saw the light of day. I can't say much about Ashe, but she did do well in the story.
I disagree slightly. I believe that FF-X was the last, as it was in my opinion a great game. Right now, from what I've played, FF-6 (labeled FF-3 on the cartridge) and FF-X have been my two favorites thus far. Can say anything either way about FF-7, as I've been a bad boy and haven't played it yet, but from I've heard, I'm by no means am going to be disappointed by FF-7 when I do pick it up this summer.
FF-12 was ok, in it's own right it was a great game. But it didn't hold up to the other FF games, and it showed the direction that the series is heading in; downhill. This is supported by the fact that Zero Punctuation now has a review for FF-13, of which didn't speak well of it.
FF X-2 was an absolute embarrassment.
.
Just my two cents worth
Me personally, I think the series has turned more into a cash cow for Square-Enix. Ever since the merge it's been more about the money, instead of it being about making a game.

I'll put my neck out... I'm a die hard fan, FFVII though all the way, X, XII, VII, I thought was good, Final Fantasy XI: Online I though was pretty damn awsome.
I will agree it's becoming more of a graphics show then story, but i still have most of them.. even t hough I never did play IX... should I be shot?
