Fullscreen freezes, but windowed mode works fine

I just noticed this after playing in windowed mode recently, I can play all day in windowed mode and the game has never run better, not a hiccup, not a freeze, not a drop in frames, exit and switch to fullscreen same resolution 1920x1080, and within moments, especially during a loading screen, BAM...game freezes and you have to ctrl/alt/del to end process.

Seriously?

I guarantee you it's not computer specs.

AMD

FX-6300 Liquid cooled OC to 4.1Ghz

R9 280x Sapphire stock clock ( also does this with my crossfired 270x cards installed too)

16Gb Ram G skill ripjaw 1600

1 Tb velociraptor 10k hdd

850w power supply

gigabyte 970a-d3p mobo

Any one else have this issue? I'd be interested in hearing any possible causes of this.

Man, so many posters ignore the How to Ask For Help pinned thread...

Typically, full screen mode vs windowed issues are caused by other running programs trying to get your attention; chat programs, anti-virus, Steam being on-line, some GPU/CPU/FPS monitors, etc. Try backing off on concurrently running software and see if it changes.

Hmm, since this isn't your typical "skyrim CTD's because of this thing I do" I wasn't sure where to ask this.

I run webroot, which has never bothered fullscreen gaming before, and the only notable fps thing I have is FRAPs, which I literally just downloaded this morning, and it still does it.

I don't have chat programs, unless steam counts as one, and I havve no clue how to make steam offline mode. I used to play skyrim off a disc set I purchased from Amazon, but when I needed to do a clean install after my last HDD toasted itself, I couldn't find the disc, so I bought it off Steam, and since then, fullscreen does not like me on skyrim, but windowed mode works fantastically.

Game is located via C:\\Programfiles(x86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Skyrim

SKSE is the current beta

I use NMM

Game version is whatever is current, same with unofficial patches for all dlc's.

As a test, fire up Steam and on the top menu; Steam-->Settings-->In-game-->Uncheck "Enable Steam Community In Game"-->Okay

That is where you can also place Steam Offline; Steam-->Go Offline

The problem I'm talking about happens in Skyrim fullscreen mode when the system tries to notify or update you on something happening. If the system gives a pop-up or window the focus, fullscreen can lock up/freeze. In windowed mode, the system can deal with screen notifications, etc, much easier.

Skyrim also doesn't play well with Alt-tabbing from fullscreen.

I just upgraded to the R9 280x so I just made sure all drivers were correct and current. I rarely alt tab out of games, so I don't think it's that, in fact windowed mode is kinda neat in that I don't have to do that.

I could not find Enable Steam Community in game, but I did uncheck enable steam overlay while in game, via steam, settings, in game option.

It's weird, it's not like it does it immediately, or all the time, but to further clarify, when in windowed mode, and I go through a door or travel, and get one of those long loading screens where in fullscreen, the game usually just stops responding and you have to ctrl/alt/del to end process and restart the exe, whereas in windowed mode, the mouse cursor turns into the spinning busy mouse icon, and the top window says Skyrim (not responding) but seconds later the game loads like nothing has happened. It does not do this in fullscreen, once it stops, it's dead and has to be restarted.

Sometimes. Actually all the time, I really wish they had simply released a 64 bit version of skyrim. Who knows how many stuff could be solved by getting away from the 32 bit LAA version. I'd love to throw all my 16Gb of Ram at it and say...load the whole damn thing into memory....

Okay, your full screen scenario describes an Infinite Loading Screen (ILS), not a "freeze", per se. (There is a difference. )

There's a few other things we might look at for an ILS (but I've never seen windowed/full screen differences for an ILS).

Before you exit somewhere, open the console (~ key), type in: pcb , hit Enter, close the console, and then exit. See if that changes the ILS at all.

How much VRAM is on your video card? Full vram can aggravate ILS problems. You could try lower texture qualities and/or turn off AA to see if it affects your ILS.

Do you have an ENB running? If so, have you changed any enblocal.ini settings?

Do you have the default entries in skse.ini file for enabling Sheson's mempatch?

Have you cleaned your mods with TES5edit?

Have you changed the uGridsToLoad ini setting to more than 5?

The mod Stable uGrids to Load checks for a few things which may cause an ILS and might help even with default ini files.

Optional - If a loading game asset is causing the ILS, Safety Load might tell us. Safety Load was created before Sheson's patch (contained in your SKSE 1.7.0) actually fixed the memory bug. In short, Safety Load will cause a CTD instead of an ILS if certain loading problems are detected. Just for info gathering, you might install Safety Load and see if the game CTD's instead ILS's. That could tell us if some object being loaded is the problem.

My ugrids is at 7 and cell buffer 64, my video card has 3 Gb of VRAM, and if need be I have a second card in Crossfire to use if that is ever taxed. No ENB's. For Sheson's patch that is incorporated into the recent SKSE, i have inital memory at 768, and the second heap at 512.

I usually don't clean mods that tell me in their desription that they are not to be cleaned, otherwise, everything is backed up to a separate HDD, and cleaned.

Like I said, in fullscreen, sometimes it plays fine, and then it will lock up on loading screen, but in windowed mode of the same resolution of 1920x1080p, it runs beautifully at 60 fps determined by FRAP's on Ultra settings. On fullscreen, the game never bogs down, or hiccups, it just outright goes "hrrrrnt" and stops responding altogether, sometimes loading screens, ocassionally when I would try to use the forge in my house, it would lock up when the camera pans around. It did it pretty bag on my 2gb VRAM R9 270x card when I ran it in crossfire with another 270x. I think what may have happened with that, is that crossfire still sucks and was constantly parking, and bringing the second GPU online all the time, which caused stuttering a lot and other crap. When I would disable crossfire and run a single card, or run windowed because crossfire doesn't enable in windowed mode, the game runs fine.

Crazy game is crazy. Drives me nuts most of the time, but I keep coming back....all the glorious mods.......I can never play console, or vanilla skyrim again.

The benefit of mods to you is also their bane to Skyrim; too many and there WILL be problems.

Obviously, I'm not familiar with every mod out there and can't really comment on particular load orders. I will say this:

Higher uGrids contributes to instability. Period. It may not CAUSE an issue, but it will never help. In fact, MOST ini "tweaks" contribute to instability in one way or another. After two and a half years of trying every tweak you can imagine, I now use default ini files with only a couple "fixes" (projectile distance, ENB requirements, grass).

The majority of mod load problems are due to "conflicts"; one mod doing the same thing as another. THE most general and obvious way to minimize conflicts is to reduce or eliminate mods which do the same thing. For instance; UFO, AFT, FollowerWander (has a warning.) You have 3 Skill Speed esp's. Multiple Perk mods. Advanced Killmoves has a warning that does not seem to have been heeded. And a bunch of script intensive mods. Expanded Weather SAYS it's not compatible with CoT.

To get a reliable game going, I would:

1. Install enbseries .254. Run it in ENBoost mode (memory fixes only: no graphics, no FPS hits). Along with SKSE mempatch, it is mandatory for heavy mod loads.

2. Revert to a vanilla install. Don't touch your ini files. Pick your 20 favorite mods, read the entire mod description page for compatibility/requirement issues. Get them working. Build from there.

3. If you want "extras" for a particular kind of mod (CoT, Enhanced Weather), pick ONE and find out what the mod author recommends for that mod.

4. Learn to detect and resolve conflicts with TES5edit. IMHO, a necessary skill for intense modding.

Not what you want to hear, but your current setup and load order will NEVER be stable and it has nothing to do with your hardware. We cannot force Skyrim to do what we want; we can barely get it to do what we need.
