Tamriellic Craftworks is an expansion on the idea behind my Tamriellic Glassworks mod for Oblivion; It is intended as an aesthetic overhaul of Skyrim, based on the concepts of region, culture and materials. For the moment this mod will focus on weapons, clutter and banners, but may eventually be expanded to cover other elements such as armour and architecture (we'll have to see how far those get, as my free time is hardly infinite)

This project takes its art and aesthetic direction from a variety of sources including Credo by ActusReus, The Witcher series produced by CDProjektRed, both the Demon Souls and Dark souls franchises by From Software, medieval art, and of course the length and breadth of The Elder Scrolls series by Bethesda Softworks and Zenimax. This means that I have a rich tapestry to draw upon, though my primary focus is on believable art that works in a medieval world with elements of later points in history (a more Victorian look to mass-produced glassware for example).

The first planned release for the mod will include the following:

  • Replacement of all drink bottles found in-game.
  • Whiterun-Style hunting knife (total of 144 blades based on the same shape, varying by material, colour and quality).
  • Hunterborn Compatibility Patch.
  • Whiterun-Style Arrows (Broadhead, Armour-Piercing, Serrated, Hunting) and quivers (16 variations by material, colour and quality)
  • New crafting items for producing the new TCW items.
  • New books detailing the new TCW items (also required in player inventory for crafting).

Still working on new content along with screenshots of the project. If you would like to see screenshots from back when the project was a series of discrete modules, check my images on Nexus, or have a look at the Hunter's Edge Thread here on the Nexus forums.

Making the ink and dye bottles for what was then Hunter's Edge rekindled my interest in virtual glassware. Skyrim's update of Gamebryo (It's still Gamebryo, no matter what new name and rendering engine you choose to slap on it) has offered some significant improvements in rendering translucent surfaces as well as materials like glass; we finally have a refraction shader for example, meaning I no longer have to resort to visual trickery to simulate glass refraction in a curved bottle. Unfortunately they still haven't dealt with the alpha channel bug that plagued Oblivion and damn-near killed Tamriellic Glassworks. If you put two translucent surfaces together in Skyrim (one behind the other), the surface behind the first surface will become invisible from certain angles. With this issue sill present, I unfortunately can't create translucent drinks, though the refraction helps to compensate a bit at least.

The new bottles all rely on one texture and use vertex colours and mesh settings to determine the colour and features that the bottle has (makes for significantly less overhead when running the content, allowing me to create highly detailed items that won't bog down most machines). Black-Briar mead is up first, with a new bottle that features a lightning stopper, glassmaker's mark and the meader logo moulded onto the side of the bottle. Also features a new label that has yet to be finalized; I seem to be having some trouble finding the font used for the original logo. If somebody knows it, please contact me.

I've also been working on banners for each of the regions and faction. I've pretty much finalized the ones for the Third Empire of Tamriel: Mede Dynasty, the Stormcloak Rebellion and the Third Aldmeri Dominion. I've done work on several of the holds, but I'm not satisfied with the results so I'll be tweaking those for a while yet.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Still plugging away at the banners. I've divided the presentation shots for the Holds into groups of 3 (easier given the fact that there are 9 of them). I'm finally satisfied with the central Holds, though the Holds to the East and West are still under development. And before anybody says anything, yes: Falkreath's new symbol is heavily influenced by the heraldry from Mirrah in Dark Souls 2, though with some Nordic flare of course.

Who wants some mead?

I've finalized the bottle and label for Honningbrew; didn't use the original font (which from the looks of things was the same as the Black-Briar font in Bethesda's labels), but I did end up finding one that seems to suit the aesthetic of the logo. I'll admit I'm a bit annoyed that a lot of the fine details that I put into the Honningbrew bottle (notably the writing and bumps that appear at the bottom of the bottle) are obscured by the refraction effect. They are there, but you simply can't see them as long as refraction is in place.

As for Black-Briar, I gave up on looking for the font and found a suitable replacement. I've also created a special variation of the label for the Black-Briar Reserve (now called "Black-Briar Mead Private Reserve"), featuring a gold inlay atop the regular ink. The only downside is that the custom label seems to invoke the alpha channel error on the Black-Briar bottles (probably because so much of the label is masked out). It may just be my game configuration though; looks like it's finally time to call in the beta testers.

Behold: the alpha error in all of its... er... glory:

Still left in the pipe for glass mead bottles are the Dragon's Breath mead from Solitude, of course a recreation of my Watchet Stag mead from the old my Glassworks mod. All other mead bottles are instead going to be salt-glazed stonewear; it's more in keeping with the general aesthetics I have planned for the Nords (as opposed to the glassware favoured by the Imperials), and it also works well for the generic items that are left to be made, as stonewear would be easier to manufacture.
