Need Help Building A PC

Recommended Posts

I'm a huge fan of Fallout & Skyrim, and after finding this site I want to try out some of these mods.

I'm a console gamer, but I want to get a PC that will let me play these games & mods without any issues. I've been looking it up but every website says something different & I have no clue about PC gaming.

What PC should I get for gaming/using mods for around $1,500-$2,000?

I'm not opposed to building my own PC I just don't know where I should start and what parts are important.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

You should try your local pc shop, they will help you build that dream machine for you, just ask for the parts or they may even suggest parts for you. if you already have a plan to build then that's a good start. if not just ask and we can lay down a build plan for you.

Thanks, I've tried going to my local PC shops, but they haven't been much help to me I think I'm just going to have to build it myself. Like I said before this PC will be mainly to play Fallout 3 & NV and Skyrim, and maybe dark souls. What kind of PC build will give me the best performance for my budget.

I really appreciate the feedback and any advice is welcome.

Is this a good build?

that list is a very good start. some things i would consider

first peripherals. do you need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, etc? those can add another $400+ easy to your build. and are nothing something you should skimp on either!

as far as the parts list goes, its good so far. i would bump up to 16gb RAM. no reason to not build new systems with 16GB, consoles are jumping up so future games may start using more RAM. I would also personally recommend sticking with Windows 7 x64. Unless you are already used to Windows 8. its a matter of preference, some disagree, but i just dont like Windows 8 lol. lastly, with that sort of budget, you might want to consider a 248GB SSD or even a 500GB. plenty of room for games and OS and other things. I dont have Skyrim or FO on my SSD, as i have them on Steam and my Steam folder is much to large for my 240GB SSD, so its on its own 1TB HDD, but ive had games like StarCraft and Dragon Age on my SSD, and i can attest to shorter load times....being on an SSD doesnt affect FPS or anything though. but knowing how often FO3 and Skyrim has load times, it might benefit to have them on an SSD, if you can manage it.

that ssd is pretty small if you are planing on putting windows on it, i suggest something bigger like a 500gb model. The thing with Windows it takes up allot of space depending what version you get. i also found more then 16gb of ram is more then adequate, if you have everything from antivirus it can use up more then 2gb of ram, its best to have more then what you need. i currently have 6 out of 8gb of ram usable do to everyday applications.

Thanks for all the advice guys i'm gonna bump up to 16gb RAM and look into getting more memory.

As for the other things I need i want to use my tv as my monitor and connect it with an HDMI cable. I have a headset, but wen it comes to keyboard and mouse would it be better to get just an average keyboard and mouse because I planned to use a console controller to play the games.

If you don't have a HDTV, using the tv as a monitor probably is a bad idea considering the resolution. HDTV for browsing the internet is horrible, while gaming and movie-watching might give a great experience. If you don't have a HDTV, consider getting a monitor. You can get a great gaming monitor for about 240USD if you are willing to invest that mutch.

And since you are new to PC gaming, I'd also recommend Windows 8.1 and not Windows 7. There is really no need to get used to Windows 7 when you can get used to Windows 8 which will give you a tiny bit better performance than 7.

I, personally, don't think you need 850w power supply unless you're planning to overclock or upgrade in the future. I have a little more power draining setup than you (I think) and I'm doing fine with 750w. 850w PSU might be more than you need, but it doesn't hurt having a little extra!

Also a little tip for when you are going to build it. Just put in all the components before hooking the cables up. Much easier! Make sure you tidy up your cables aswell.

Edit; If you want a wireless connection, remember to get a wireless adapter!!

Thanks for the heads up I have an HDTV so that one things i don't have to worry about lol & i'm already used to windows 8 so i'll just stick with it like you said if it'll improve my performance. I was thinking about the power supply i was thinking out getting about that much but wasn't sure if it was too much now i'll definitely get it. I think I'm gonna stick to a wired connection.

Now all I have to do is get a controller then I'll order it all.

lol i have no comment on a controller for a computer, as i use a keyboard and mouse for everything. if a game needs a controller to be playable on a PC, ill just get it for my console.

for reference though, i have a Corsair K90 keyboard and a Logitech G600 mouse. love them both.
