It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time 8.2[11]

First Steps in Response

He kept reading through out the printed, and stapled, notebook and was soon reading another set of stories on yet another big vanishing. Towards the end of World War Two a large number of Nazi Germans had vanished, including some infamous scientists, high ranking officers and politicians. Officially the stories were disbelieved by the Allies but it was noted that Germany's fall accelerated after the event especially as many Germans turned against their old government. Hitler's ending was a mystery and their were many stories of possible deaths such as suicide in a bunker, stoning by an angry crowd, assassination by rebel German generals and a few others. Yet there remained many doubts about all of those popular stories. Had Hitler vanished when glowing globes, and saucers, were spotted shooting up from the ground to the sky above?

Were there any other such stories of great vanishings? No, not as such except for sightings of flying globes leaving the world in much smaller numbers. Some stories were very old, going back to the ancient empires of Rome, Egypt, the Aztecs and others. Yet there were Aboriginal rock paintings, in the area of Ayers Rock, that showed what could have been the same.

Then there were stories of green-purple comet like projectiles coming from the moon to strike the Earth, Terra. They appeared to be linked with horrible stories of the appearance of the glimmering mists of undeath, of shambling zombies, flittering vampires, glimmering phantom wraiths and other monsters.

The sightings of grey saucers was often linked with other strange accounts.

The commonality of these stories that they were few, and far between, when compared to the great volume of general histories of the world.

Did the Havenlanders having something to add except to admit to Armstrong, and a select number of others, that almost all Havenlanders were megahumans though most were not superhumans, metahumans or powermutants. No, they were omnihumans sharing a secondary, central, mentality known as the omnimind. A relatively small minority of Havenlanders were outlander type humans but all dwelt at the edges of the Havenlands. There were non Havenlander megahumans but they were not spoken of, at least not so far. His wife, to be, had spoken of Havenlander high council meetings taking place, of the Empress herself taking a part in decisions, which was a big thing for Havenlanders. They were deciding on what more secrets to reveal and to whom.

Armstrong closed his eyes, resting them after much reading, and went to sleep. He 'dreamed' vividly of a vast, strangely concealed, spaceship orbiting Luna. That is a phantomic vessel that probes had gone right through with out detecting as did even grey gysaucerboats and blackjets. He 'dreamed' of very hitech machinery, of slow moving robots, of dimly lit hallways, of black monsters moving in shadowy areas, of the shambling figures of once living humanoids in strange armoured suits. There was much more and though he could not name what he observed, somehow it was familiar to him. Then there were special discoveries less horrific and more hopeful that he focused on just to gain something positive from what was largely an amazingly vivid 'nightmare'.

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time 9.1[12]
It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

Special forces, traditional slayers, and others waged a scattered, and largely secret war, around the globe of the Terra.

Many exotic agencies were carrying out largely secret investigative researches on largely mysterious subjects.

International expeditionary taskforces were busy in Central Australia, in Vietnam, in the English Moors, in Germany, in Central America and other places around the world including deep beneath the sea.

A green comet-projectile were destroyed before it could get through the Terran world-bubble. A blackjet did so but it became widely known that at least half of such projectiles were destroyed either by the Lunar World-Bubble or by the Terran World-Bubble.

New Terran satellites, orbiting Luna, used special cameras to pick up evidence of scattered, strange, battles taking place across the Lunar Surface. There appeared to be at least two large forces fighting each other.

The Silver Beatles brought out the new album Captain Pepper's Super Sunshine Band.

The Umbrella Technologies Corporation (UmbTek) surprised the rest of the world when an orbital spacecraft arrived to orbit Luna. It was much smaller than the UNSS Challenger, had a crew of only four astronauts, but was soon landing a remote roving probe (RRP) on the surface of Luna. The rest of the world was mostly not pleased by the sneakiness.

Elvis the Pelvis, famous white blues singer, starred in his movie Jail-house Rocking.

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time 10.1[13]
First Steps in Reaction

Israeli battletanks moved across the desert at night and with them moved, in wary alliance, United Arab Forces machines. There were also other kinds of machines, many of them being upgraded older kinds. There were many soldiers, too many of them being conscripts or national service types. With them went a Havenlander Special Support Weapons Unit in advanced hovercraft.

Sand shifted and the wind blew but only weakly.

Old desert tales spoke of metallic stone pyramids that appeared, only to vanish again, along with other structures of the same material. One had shown up and its darker, than dark, shape showed up ahead on the horizon. It was easily bigger than any of the Great Pyramids that had been renovated with white surfacing and golden pyramid caps. It was doubtful that any mobs of tourists had gawked at this pyramid, taking photographs, but clearly people had found it and had changed.

What had been Africa Corps German soldiers, of World War Two, shambled quickly towards the on coming human forces. There were Nazi elite SS Stormtroopers with them. Those were the zombies but there were the smarter, zombie like, ghouls that held weapons and used them. Ghouls fired old fashioned type rifles and submachineguns. Some of the guns exploded because they were not maintained properly.

Experienced, in too many battles including against horrors, the Israeli and Arab officers knew what too do. They quickly set up an efficient defensive position that took excellent advantage of the lay of the land, of sand dunes and rocky outcrops. Soon bullets, shells, rockets and grenadeshells were being hurled at the oncoming undead. The Havenlanders fired off xolaser beams that swept away lines of the shambling undead.

Then they came, Africa Corps warmachines being battletanks and halftrack vehicles, armored-cars and other kinds. Ghouls drove them, 'manned' them, and tried to use them. More than one machine exploded as lack of maintenance again showed itself. Zombies clung to the back of the machines, sometimes falling off to be crushed to death by their own vehicles.

The defenders went to ground as much as possible as the first air strike took place. Two waves of USAF jets shot overhead and bombs struck the haphazard undead formations. Explosions ripped apart warmachines, zombies and ghouls. Israeli jets were soon to follow and then Arabian machines.

The battle raged on but by the time it was done the metallic stone pyramid was gone almost as if it had never been there. The undead were all destroyed!

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time 11.1[14]

First Steps in Response

Thanks largely due to upgrades to the UNSS Challenger, the trip to Luna was a lot shorter than it had previously been calculated to be. As it came closer to Luna, the moonship spotted one of the small, exotic, 'semimoons' that orbited Terra's Moon. They were thirteen in number, each being from nine to one kilometre wide. The speculation had long agreed that the pattern of the semimoons, and other features, meant that they must be artificial.

Mission parameters were designated flexible from the start for the semimoons had an odd way of vanishing from sight, from radar, and not always from both at the same time. They came closer to one of the three three kilometre wide semimoons, noting its world-bubble holding in some kind of atmosphere, and the strange patterns of blue, brown, green and other colors across it surface.

The Havenlander blackship 'appeared' being a darker shape in the darkness of space, a gap amongst the stars. A voice came from it, Havenlander accented but in Esperanto the internationalist language. Then the same warning was repeated in other languages. "Warning, do not approach any closer to Semimoon Beta03. Do not approach any closer to Semimoon Beta03. The Triguardians have stewardship authority over all thirteen minimoons. Do not attempt to send probes or to do any forms of energy probes or scans. You are otherwise free to video record as you can, using telescopes and zooming capacities. There being Havenlanders aboard will not stop us from opening fire if we have to do so."

Armstrong stood next to Amanda looking out of an armored viewport window. "So you Havenlanders are not fully united."

She shook her head. "That is not what the last part of the warning means. It means that the Triguardians must carry out there duty even if Havenlanders die. Thus Havenlanders can not be used as hostages by others to gain access to the minimoons. Please do not ask me what the minimoons, are name for the semimoons, really are. The Empress has decided to release more information both to the Havenlander mass citizenry and to the rest of the world."

Armstrong shook his head. "That blackship must be at least five times the size of the UNSS Challenger with all of its extras."

She shook her head. "No, more like a hundred times bigger. Each carries many blackjets. Truth is that we regular Havenlanders do not know much about the Elite Havenlanders and their secrets, including their tech. Our tech is more advanced than that of the rest of the world but theirs is more advanced than ours. As we loan you tech, that you can use but not 'back engineer', the Elites do the same with other Havenlanders."

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time 12.1[15]

First Steps in Response

Mulder, and Scully, landed at Ayers Rock Airport that was large enough, in some ways, to take international flights even if it had only a relatively small terminal complex. The reason was that only a limited amount of aircraft were allowed to take off, and land, in the city despite the brisk trade in regulated tourism that went on. It was an open secret, amongst many circles, that the tourism trade was used to conceal the coming and going of folks who were only officially tourists. This was the status of the handsome, almost gawky, Mulder and very attractive Scully who were married for real but who now had a false surname on their ID-cards, passports, visas and other documents including clearance papers to enter Ayers Rock City.

The terminal complex was very modern, having been totally rebuilt and then largely upgraded more than once. Great corridor arms went out to link to the doorways of the aircraft so the passengers walked straight from the jet into the terminal. Advanced video cameras observed them as they did so and there were many security guards in fatigues and body-armor who were armed with submachineguns, pistols, electric stunners and sticks. Yet there were enough tourists, in brighter casual gear, that the pair did not stand out much. That is except for Scully who got many looks from men thanks to her attractiveness, minidress and her eyes.

They were going to join an expedition to go into the newly discovered labyrinth of caves found beneath Ayers Rock. Yet they also were being given a few days to actually have a holiday in the metropolis; this was partly out of Skinner's kindness, he being their official boss, and the need for them to sink into the scene before they got replaced by clever look a likes.

Sitting at a cafe, they sipped strong coffee and ate small pastries while a big colored TV showed news in brief. UmbTek, the Umbrella Technologies Corporation, was facing a great deal of sharp attention for its surprise mission to Luna. Not only was there heavy criticism from major governments, the UN, large NGOs and other powerful bodies but international investigations were starting into UmbTek on many; already there had been smaller investigations into tax fraud, illegal research development programs, slavery, smuggling and much else. UmbTek was known to have shifted most of its activities to the exotic Southern Atlantic 'semicontinent', a land mass between an island and a true continent, of Zazteca where the infamous Zaztec Empire had once ruled. They had even built a series of cities, and towns, there along with other infrastructure.

Yet this news had strong competition as the Havenic Empress spoke openly of very old Havenlander secrets; the Havenlanders were based largely in the 'Terran Underworld', that she would not speak of in great detail. The Havenlanders were made up not just of known megahumans but other kinds along with nonhuman megafolk of a wide range of kinds. They were not the only peoples of the underworld but she, again, would give no details. Nor did she take any questions from the press. What she did do was to authorize the release of a briefing to the peoples of the world, and not just to the governments.

Suddenly he was there, almost as if he had always been there. It was Graham Maharg, their true boss though his official existence was a tricky one at best. Nor was he the only 'Maharg' linked to the Maharg Foundation, the Maharg Corporation and the Maharg Cooperative along with many other bodies, most of which did not have 'Maharg' as part of their names. Most people would have been shocked to know the names of many of those organizations. The Mahargs, and the organizations, were all linked to the Havenlanders.

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time 12.2[16]

First Steps in Response

Maharg spoke with a warm, strong voice of no particular defining accent. He did so in English! While his face somehow gave a strong impression, there was nothing specific about it that clearly did so. "You were sent a short briefing on the appearance of glimmermist, and zombies, here in Ayers Rock City. Thanks to fast action by special forces, the situation has been resolved though not smoothly; such situations rarely are. The glimmermist came from a busted, secret, pipeline running below the disco club. It was a very old steel pipe most likely put into the ground in the 1910s when there were not even any buildings in the area. The ancestor of UmbTek, known as the International Investments Company, the IIC, was officially in the area as a large multiple task scientific team seeking to measure the commercial value of the area. The area, effected by the glimmermist, has been sealed off. Not only zombies came from the mist but also fewer nombies."

Scully frowned softly. "We have over 100 XFiles linked directly, or indirectly in a strong fashion, to UmbTek from supersoldier projects to captured UFOs to tales of reanimated corpses and almost anything else that you could mention. They are officially banned from the Havenlands and a wide range of nations around the world while many other nations have unofficial policies of keeping them out. There were those hushed up stories of zombies swarming in Central Africa in the infamous PanAfrican League that is the puppet of UmbTek and various of its subsidiaries. Yes, BaboonCity, that was abandoned and sealed up apart from UmbTek authorized teams."

Trouble was that while the PanAfrican League was infamous, it was not a member of the United Nations and it treated its general population far better than did many other Third World Countries; that is fairly good wages, cheap or free health care, cheap good quality housing and much else of the kind. Yet it was a police state with a fake democracy, vanishings and other crimes almost too numerous to mention.

Scully went on. "UmbTek does its dirty work in Central Africa and has its corporate motherland in the Southern Atlantic, or is that over generalizing?"

"No, with only a few exceptions of late." Maharg frowned softly. "The IIC was active in many parts of the world, until 1924, when it was destroyed under mysterious circumstances or at least officially so. The Havenlanders smashed it through the use of megahumans and allies including Torchwood and FEAR. It was hoped that all IIC sites were tracked down and dealt with but clearly this one was not discovered until recent troubles took place."

First Encounter Assault Recon were supersoldiers with special abilities. They had first dealt with the strange case of the small city of Fairport, in an isolated part of supercontinent of North America, where the AMA Corporation had run the Alma and related projects in the great, underground, secret complex of JunoBase. Fairport was now officially abandoned and sealed off by special units of the US military.

Maharg gave over a briefcase, which the pair were not sure that they had seen before he did so. "Cash in mostly small denominations, five fake identities, appearance changing items, weapons, tools, other utilities, fully cashed up bankcards and a good deal of valuable information though nothing highly classified."

But then he touched a hand of each of both Scully and Mulder. Both had a brief, peaceful, semiconscious moment and when they came out of it they had a whole lot of exotic highly classified information that they had to process. Maharg was gone but a waitress was soon appearing with a smile and some of their favorite food and drink; it was all paid for, of course, and the waitress had already been tipped generously so she was all extra smiles.

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time 13.1[17]
First Steps in Reaction

Blackstation AlphaTwo, the second of three cloaked low orbital spacestations operated by the Triguardians and linked to the blackships and blackjets, guided in a blackboat that was much bigger than a blackjet but much smaller than a blackship. Its antigravity drives had brought it up from the Northern Polar Havenlands bring fresh equipment and supplies, mostly supplies, and some people to do turn overs with.

But something was wrong! The commander of BSA2 knew as much. The blackboat was arriving 23.5 minutes later with out bothering to report in the delay or any form of explanation.

Purple comet-projectiles had come in a cluster from Luna's surface, through its world-bubble, to speed towards Terra and the blackboat could have been struck by one though it would be highly improbable for that to happen. Even if not all of those on board the vessel had been overcome, perhaps enough 'invaders' had gotten into the vessel for it to be no longer under the control of Havenlanders.

Triguardians did special scans, and probes, of the vessel and the worst was confirmed. Undead creatures, mostly ghoul humanoids, were swarming through parts of the ship. Vampires, smarter and with exotic powers, led the others. Vampires were powerful, smarter undead and lichs even more so but there were no lichs in the vessel. Driven by the 'endless hunger', the aggressive undead could not but go after the living with a fanatical madness.

The blackboat exploded but not before the Triguardians gained some very disturbing information. The live Havenlander adults teleported across all of the very few children with them, then fourteen of the adults, before activating the self destruction network-system that caused a mixture of well placed explosions and implosions through out the vessel. The Havenlanders, still on board, had sacrificed themselves to stop the undeath taking over more of the vessel. Yet the Triguardian, that had escaped, brought grim news. An exotic beacon had been found well hidden in the blackboat that was designed to draw a comet-projectile towards it. This indicated some kind of deep treason was at work, perhaps even amongst the Triguardians, which was a great shock to most of the Havenlanders; oddly enough this did not include the Triguardians.
