When I try to get healed at an altar at a chapel of the NIne Divines I get a message to repent my evil ways instead of getting cured/healed/restored.

My current character actually hasn't done much bad (stolen a few minor things but nothing compared to my first character who was in both the thieves guild and dark brotherhood but never seemed to have problems with the altars.) My current fame is at 8 and infamy is 0 and I have a bounty of 1. (I believe I had the same issue when my bounty was 0 for that matter.)

Does anyone have any idea what the trigger is for the negative reaction from the Nine Divines or how one can effectively repent?

Well - the theory is if infamy points exceed fame points they will not heal you. Can't quite work out why you have a problem. Double check it's not the bounty.

Having any bounty at all will cause instant rejection by the Altar of the Nine. Go pay the 1 gold and you should be okay again. ^^

That did it. No idea what my 1 bounty was for but all set now. At least it's trivial to clean out the evidence chest in Oblivion compared to Morrowind. (It was a gem, a book and maybe something else, so no great loss even if I couldn't get it back.)

a wierd glitch in the game is that some guards will give you a bounty of 1 gold for no reason and not tell you about it.
Like somewhere else in the forums, a guy talked to a imperial soldier and gave the guy a bounty of 1 gold for no reason...
it happened to me too
