I was wondering if there was a topic with all the abbreviations you use, because I can't understand most of what I read...

For example, I was reading this topic that has only four posts and I see DW (Ok I guessed Dual-Wield because of the first post), AW (Also guessed Arcane Warrior because of the title), BM, DPS, CC, YMMV... I would certainly find more while reading other topics.

BM - Bowl Movement.

Yeah I don't know what the hell people are talking about most of the time when I see these being thrown around.

It took me a while to realize GW was Grey Warden!

BM = blood mage
DPS = damage per second
CC = character creation or in that case " crowd control"
YMMV = "Your Mileage May Vary"

I don't know if there are many, but if ever maybe this post will become a reference or maybe there should be a general topic on the main forum with all the abbreviations split in categories. For "noobs" like me, like you say.

There are also some common abbreviations like the BTW in that topic who means By The Way if I am not mistaken.

I had to have someone explain to me what AoE is but that means Area of Effect.

It's like a different language I'm getting the hang of it, I do a Google search for any I don't know the meaning of, so far my Googling has proved successful.

I'm still not 100% certain what 'vanilla' and 'steam' versions are. I think vanilla is the game as is no changes as well as being a plant used for flavouring and very nice it is and steam is some version that has auto update, perhaps downloaded with no discs, but I'm just guessing.

Perhaps management could keep a list somewhere that is locked and only for reference, I don't want to have to trawl through hundreds of posts to find out what something stands for.

You are correct about vanilla. It's the game as it stands originally released without modification. Steam is the property owned by Valve, makers of the Half Life series, Portal, Team Fortress, amongst others. Steam is their online service that automatically updates their games, plus has features to buy other maker's games online also with automatic updates. The filing system on the user's computer leave much to be desired for modifications. Also, at least as the Valve games are concerned, you have to have Steam active while playing. While you have the option to play Dragon Age while online with Bioware, Steam is an automatic on or you don't play.

Which is exactly why I won't buy software (game or other) that employs those method of distribution.

Whenever I can, I download all patches and updates to my local machine so that I have my own copy "just in case", then install them myself. Full Disclosure - I don't do this for my OS, since the interdependencies get waaaaay too complicated for me to keep straight, and Restore Points serve that function anyway.

But having distinct local copies of the DA:O patches 1.01b, 1.02a, and 1.03 let me roll-back to a stable game environment when 1.03 caused massive problems on my system, and then do some rather elaborate experimentation (ultimately successful) to try to resolve them.

I understand that Steam users with the same CtD issues are *still* SOL!

No I don't I've not long arrived home absolutely cream crackered and my brain is too addled to try and work it out.
