SKSE 1.7.01 Crash On Startup

So I've had this problem for a while, but I've mostly been able to avoid it by going back to version 1.6.16 of SKSE.

TL;DR: SKSE 1.7.0 and 1.7.01 don't work. Previous version do, but I have to update. I need a fix.

Here's my problem:

I click the skse_loader.exe, and the command prompt shows up for a second like it's supposed to, goes away, and then right as the black screen of my Skyrim comes up, it crashes. It doesn't even make it to the Bethesda Logo (poor Bethesda). This only happens with SKSE v1.7.01 and 1.7.0, if I launch it with 1.6.16, it works fine. Therefore it cannot be a problem with my load order, so don't worry about it.

I'm completely at a loss and I have no idea what else I can do.

What I have done:

  • started as Administrator
  • Deleted SKSE folder in My Games\Skyrim root and started
  • Restarted the computer
  • Ran while Steam is running
  • Run TESV.exe and then skse_loader.exe
  • Run BOSS checks
  • Deactivated all mods (reactivating ~200 mods is a pain)
  • Validated Skyrim Archive using Steam
  • sacrificed a goat
The one thing that I have found that works for others is deleting theinformation inside the skse.ini file. The problem is that I have no skse.ini file, nor do I know where it should go to create one.

If you can help in anyway, or have a suggestion, I will follow it.

Thanks so much for your help! ^.^

Update/Bump

In addition to the aforementioned attempts to fix I have now

  • Uninstalled/Reinstalled Skyrim
  • Used LOOT to optimize my load order(why not?)
  • Used the installer version of 1.7.01
  • Run SKSE with no mods active
Come on people, there's got to be an answer...

EDIT: I had a thought, do plugins that work with skse need to update when it does? I will check if this is a viable solution later today...

did you try placing a skse.ini file? Here's one you can download: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/51038/?

I have now, and still no dice. 512MB of allocated memory is a ton, but do you think it might need more, I am running all of the HD patches and a ton of hair mods, etc. I'm just so confused because I never needed any of these files before with previous versions, and it has worked fine. I've also check the "whatsnew" category of the SKSE page and on the forum post, the only thing that could have messed with my game is "enabled previously-temporary Papyrus plugin API - it isn't what I wanted it to be, but I don't think I have the time to do it the right way"but I don't think that's the issue. I have seen another forum post about the skse.ini so I will see if that can help me at all.

This has me curious....

Deleted SKSE folder in My Games\Skyrim root and started

The only thing SKSE puts in that folder are the LOG files.

SKSE DLL and Launcher go in the main Skyrim folder.....>.......\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim

The scripts folder goes in the Data folder.......>......Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Data\scripts

Now speaking of the Logs....have a look at the LOG files SKSE is creating in the ......\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\SKSE .....see if it lists any errors...Check...skse_steam_loader.log

I know this, but at the time it was a 'why not?' situation...

will do.

EDIT: So I did as instructed and I couldn't find any error statements, but I've never looked at these logs before. In the spoilers are direct copies of my log files:

The only thing I find suspicious is this line:

Considering I am running 1.9.32 of Skyrim. Can someone confirm/deny that this happens on a working copy?

Disk install gives problems.

What directories are Skyrim and SKSE installed in? If it's in C:/ and more specifically, program files, that can give problems.

By the way are you installing with NMM? Because that has given problems in the past, just use the installer option from the SKSE website. Your mod manager will recognise it's installed regardless of whether you used the manager to install it or not.

My Skyrim folder is in the default C:Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common

SKSE is in the Skyrim folder.

Everything is installed correctly. The problem lies not with my installation of the game and SKSE, since all previous versions have worked fine. There are only two problems I can think of right now:

  1. One or more of my plugins that run with SKSE 1.6.16 need to update tp the 1.7.01 format (which I have been getting all of those mods together and will probably test tomorrow)
  2. Something changed between 1.6.16 to 1.7.0 that is just enough that my computer isn't willing to reload everything with the changes made in the update.
