The Writers and Translators of Skyrim

Recommended Posts

Hi! If you're good at writing, or want to recruit a writer for your project, then feel free to post here. Here is my resume, everyone else follow this format. Thanks! Oh, and this thread also covers translators/ mod translations too! So please include that in your resume, if applicable!

Tutorials and modding articles can also be published here!

Name: mlee3141

Availability: Somewhat. Say, a 50/ 50 chance.

Account Activity: I respond to all communication in a timely manner

Contact Info: PM me on the Nexus Forums

Knowledge: I'm fairly adept at TES lore, from the events of Daggerfall, to Skyrim and beyond.

Style: I'm quite the talented writer, with an ambitious vision. If you need grand storylines written, just let me know. I tend to be more dramatic, and use creative liberties in my work. I can also write misc lines, follower and marriage dialogue, as well as advanced commentary. Bottom line, if you want to make your characters interesting, I can certainly do that for you. Oh, and I can also do intermediate Quest Design!

Skills: I can create NPCs, and get custom dialogue into the game. Scripting is not my forte, but basic, quest-oriented scripting is certainly doable for me. Since I'm also the Project Director for Vortex of Time, I'm quite busy, but don't hesitate to ask me for help! I'll see what I can do.

Samples: Check my signature; I would be more than happy to send you a quest from Vortex of Time/ the Vvardenfell Expansion via PM. Just ask.

That would be good, definitely.

Right now I'm caught up in writing a guide to modding. All of it. (As in making mods.)

Sort of a general guidelines thing. Currently, it consists of 4 sections:

  1. Mod Creation - focused on what you should do during mod creation to make a better, more compatible mod. Covers stuff like organization/prefixes, backups, documentation (so you can refer to it when looking back on it later), and figuring out ways to be more compatible.
  2. Mod Aftermath (need a better name) - focused on what you can do after the mod has been created, but not yet released. Covers stuff like cleaning, and testing.
  3. Mod Release and Publishing - focused on releasing your mod and publishing it. Covers things like gathering all your scripts and files, BSA creation, installer creation, writing readmes and documentation for the public - including mod description (a GOOD one), and also the pros and cons of the modding sites to release your mod to. (NEXUS!)
  4. Mod Updating - focused on what you need to do after you've released your mod. Covers things like making updates, taking feedback, creating compatibility patches, and dealing with bad eggs in the community who, inevitably, will find your mod and bash on it. No matter the site, they always exist. This includes a little pep talk about what modding is about, and also about sometimes taking a break. Because you'll need it.

So yeah... I can't do anything about my mod right now except rewrite the thread OP, which sounds a bit boring right now, and I can't play Skyrim or mod because of the stupid Surface being broken with Skyrim... :wallbash:

So I figure I might write something useful. If you've got any topics you think I should cover, feel free to add.

And maybe it could be a sort of series at some point (more specific topics for mod makers - quest design, scripting, etc. as well as a mod list + installation guidelines and mod installing stuff).

It's currently 9 pages and I started a few hours ago.

Here's some suggestions on the categories I'd like to see.

Mod Making:

Writing- Plot, Dialogue, Storyline, Commentary This and quest design would be their own guide on creating quests. Big, and small. And all about how versatile they can be.

Scripting/ Quest Design- Quest Stages, Functions, Dialogue Branches, Properties One for scripting, all on it's own. It's definitely an expansive topic.

Level Design- ?

Voice Acting- Recruiting VAs, Editing Sound Files A sort of companion guide to the quest design one (a part 2 kind of).

Tools- CK, TES edit, Audacity, Blender CK covered in various tutorials on different aspects of it, TES5Edit mostly covered in the Modding Skyrim: Modders Edition guide that I'm currently writing.

Beta Testing: Both you and others testing is covered in Modding Skrim: Modders Edition.

Troubleshooting Techniques- ?

Getting Feedback- ?

Fixing Problems- ?

Publishing: Covered in Modding Skyrim: Modders Edition.

Comments and Critiques- ?

Updating- ?

New Content- ?

Sites- Nexus, TES alliance Also Steam Workshop.

Added my comments directly to the quote.

A lot of writing certainly, but I have no idea how long my computer is going to take. So currently planned:

Modding Skyrim: Modders Edition (Currently writing): A more general guide, though certainly detailed, on the things EVERY modder needs to know. This should apply to all modders, regardless of whether they're level designers, modelers, quest designers or scripters (though some parts of the guide may apply less, but overall it should apply to all).

Modding Skyrim: Mod Installers Edition (Probably would be last, if ever, though I did already start the mod list and was 30 pages in before... The issue with mod lists is they so quickly become out of date.): A guide on installing mods, detailing all the mod managers, their pros and cons, as well as TES5Edit, Bashed Patches, and much, much more. Includes a mod list, which I would probably take out for brevity's (and my sanity) sake.

Modding Skyrim: Quest Design (Likely would be next, if done): A guide on quest design, basic scripting related to quest design, and of course, quest and dialogue writing.

Modding Skyrim: Voice Acting (Companion to Quest Design guide): A guide on voice acting. This includes two sections - for modders, and for VAs. The first will be focused on importing voice acting, which programs to use, and the best places and ways to recruit VAs ( + writing/exporting scripts). The second will be tips on improving your voice acting quality, reading scripts and recording, finding mods to voice - and submitting good "resumes" and demos, and of course, voice files. The third section is sort of a general thing for both - how to edit your voice files (with Audacity), including adding effects and "cleaning" so even crappy sound files can sound great.

Modding Skyrim: Scripting (Would be later, and longer, probably): A large guide on as many aspects of scripting I am knowledgeable about and can cover. If I could, I would find more capable scripters than I and have them add a few sections as well.

Modding Skyrim: Modeling and Texturing (Probably won't happen): If I ever become somewhat capable at either of these things, I'll write a guide. Though it will likely be more general so it can apply to armors, weapons, etc.

Modding Skyrim: Level Design (Might happen): A guide on all aspects of level design. I have several friends who are quite capable with level design, and while I'm no good myself, I do know several "guidelines" on this.

The most likely to happen are the Quest Design and Voice Acting, and perhaps the Scripting. But first, I'm writing the Modders Edition.

Anyway... Yeah. So maybe I'll post a quest writer resume as well. I'm also quite busy with my WIP (see signature), but since I'll have some free time over the weekend to work on the aforementioned guides, I might have some time to write up a few quests. Bear in mind that I can only write a few and not on a permanent, go-to quest writer basis.

Account Activity: Very active.

Knowledge: I've never played Morrowind or the prior games, but I have played Oblivion and Skyrim rather extensively, and read up a little on the lore for TES. However, I would not consider myself a lore expert in the slightest sense of the word.

Style: I am a part time author, and have a great passion for writing. My quests/stories tend to err on the ambiguous side, in the sense that I write quests with multiple choices, often with no clear idea (until you have chosen) of what is RIGHT and what is WRONG. Nothing definitive like that. Though I can certainly do more black and white quests as well.

Skills: While I am a relatively experienced scripter and quest designer, I won't be able to help with anything more than quest ideas and perhaps a few tips on how to get your voice files into the game, since I don't have the time (again, see my signature).

Samples: Check my signature. The original post in the Immersive Quests WIP thread has multiple examples of some of my quest writings, though definitely condensed into a few paragraphs, so the quests are actually far more detailed than they appear. Take note of the Writers/Editors area for each quest to see which was written solely by me, which are the ideas of others, and which were mine but edited. If you want more details on what exactly my original ideas were, or some other shortish samples, feel free to ask and I'll respond if I've got the time.

Hello there! I'll follow the OP structure:

Name: Nassens

Availability: In a project.

Last updated: 9 - 13 - 14

Account activity: Weekly, at least.

Contact info: PM me on the Nexus forum.

Knolewdge: I have good knowledge about the lore of Skyrim, and modest knowledge about the lore of TES in general.

Style: I'm an independient professional writer in my country (Spain), and I have some deep knowledge on whatever related to stylish writing; from the point of the initial brainstorm of any book to the taking of commercial decisions on the format of the end product, and the everything in between. I am also a specialist in the character develop, growth/evolution, credibility, and appealing. Also very familiar with writing fantasy. I have taken lessons on cinema script and dialogs to. My counter part is that english is not my mother languaje, so it takes me extra time when writting in english to avoid misspelling or grammar errors.

Skills: I can develop from the zero point or working hand by hand with the modder any kind of plot, dialogs or personalities in order to give it any desired taste and a professional cut. I can also translate with great quality anything from english to spanish, or with an overall good quality from spanish to english. I have some little skills at programming and no fear of using and learning any kind of tools, so if for the job I need to learn how to use any kind of program I can do it, but if I am required to write some code then I'll need some very good explanations. I'm absolutely useless in any kind of graphical arts.

Samples: I haven't been "hired" here yet  and my IRL writings are all in spanish...
