I get to the Akaviri fort and my sneak thing says that I am detected and the battle music is on. I can here whatever it is walking and breathing, but I can't see it and it doesn't attack me, I already killed the ogres and explored the upper levels of the fort. I don't want to go inside because it might attack me. From behind, I already shot fireballs all over the place, need a little help here.

use a detect life spell so you know where it is.

Turned out it was an ogre, it became visible inside and I killed it. Detect life doesn't work on my comp, as I am running oldblivion. I am upgrading soon though.

Search the area outside the fort thoroughly and you'll get an unscripted quest that leads to the ring of omnipotence.

Ok, but I really don't feel like going back, what does the ring of omnipotence do?

It adds 3 points to about 7 skills. Quite useful early on in the game.
