kyu1595
This was originally posted by me in July 2013, but since Skyrim has not been patched by Bethesda since then, this still holds. Intro: Thanks camaro_69_327 for the update to the troubleshooting guide! Many other updates have also been added. My original post had 11k views! Original post: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/1015916-ultimate-skyrim-nexus-mod-management-guide/ Now, many of us have probably run into this problem. You download a mod, or multiple mods and all of a sudden, you CTD, bug or run into performance issues. Then you search for a solution and are forced to look through every mod you just downloaded! Well, worry no further! This guide will help you avoid ctds or other performance issues that plague many modders alike. First off, you need the most recent version of skyrim. Go on steam and download it (or otherwise ;P) Note that this information is taken from many sources: Personal experience, wiki pages, skyrim projects involved. Also, it has only been tested on a WINDOWS PC. Other systems my not apply. Terms you should know: Vanilla Skyrim: Original, unmodded Esm: refers to any file with a .esm extension. It is an acronym for Elder Scrolls Master. Esp: refers to any file with a .esp extenstion. It is an acronym for Elder Scrolls Plugin. DLC: DownLoadable Content, extra stuff that bethesda came out with! Clean Save: Does not exist. Scripts may stay in game even after a clean save. Cloaking scripts, "active" mods: Constantly updating mods, may strain weaker PCs Dirty edit: a bad edit in a mod/plugin that changes Skyrim.esm ENB: Refers to powerful post processing modification, usually a graphics mod. Ini edits: Changes to skyrim settings. Found in: Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Skyrim.ini Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Skyrimprefs.ini Papyrus Logs: Error/Warning logs. Found in: Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Logs/Script What is Legendary Edition, and versions of Skyrim?: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Patch Skyrim has not been officially patched since 1.9.32.0.8, or legendary edition. That was in March, 2013. Somes mods have not been updated to 1.9.32.0.8 and should be avoided. Included in Legendary are Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn and High Resolution DLCs. Some mods may only work with the most up to date version of skyrim, or one of the extensions. For extensions an example of incompatibility would be: you don't have Dawnguard, you might not be able to access a good vampire mod. Obviously, if you haven't updated to the latest version of skyrim, you should now. MUST HAVE DOWNLOADS: You simply must have these downloads for every modder! Many scripts won't work properly without these. All download links below. MOD MANAGERS: Nexus Mod Manager: Simple Mod Manager for downloading plugins AND Mod Organizer: A mod manager that allows you to keep "profiles", mods for different loads and setups. Also separates them into directories SUPER USEFUL: WinRaR or Alternative: For extracting files. SKSE: Script Extender for many, if not all game-changing plugins. LOOT: Largest load order organizer database, optimizes load order to prevent performance or stability issues. SkyUI: Improves the user interface to better fit the PC! Safety Load: blocks infinite loading screen bug! PATCH FIXES!(Bethesda has not updated skyrim since legendary edition in 2013, you need these): Unofficial Skyrim Patch: Fixes MANY MANY BUGS. A must-must have. Dawnguard DLC Patch Hearthfire DLC Patch Dragonborn DLC Patch High Resolution DLC Patch USEFUL DOWNLOADS(For the advanced user): All download links below. Rage inducing PC, OR maxed the pc out? PERFORMANCE: Hialgoboost: Enhances graphics card performance using a special resolution technique. Useful from low-end computers to high-end computers. Project Optimization: Improves GPU and cpu load by not running what's already there! Optimizer Textures: Reduces and fixes the size of textures by compressing the textures, improving performance. HOWEVER, may make textures have a lesser resolution. Non-gameplay related: Wyre Bash 305+: Makes mods more compatible by making a "bashed patch", removing most if not all incompatibilities. Skryim Configurator: Configures Skyrim without skyrim launcher, much more detailed. In Game related: Save Game Cleaner: Cleans saved games, saving space and decreasing load times(those annoying dead NPC's that stay there forever) Generate FNIS for Users: Add animations and animation bugs fixes. SUM: A unified skyproc patcher, for downloading patches for mods such as Skyrim Redone and Dual Sheath Redux. TES5Edit: Cleans dirty edits. However, use at your own risk. Basically cleans mods that conflict with others. All contemporary modders use this to make sure their mod doesn't interfere with others. Walkthroughs/Installation help: Project Stability: Detailed walkthrough for stability(not a mod). Also a huge source for this post. ENB: Help for ENB Installations(sorry, not a download). Papyrus Debugging: Error finding for papyrus, makes a log for errors. Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Skyrim.ini --- [Papyrus] fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0 bEnableLogging=1 bEnableTrace=1 bLoadDebugInformation=1 --- To view the errors, go to Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Logs/Script View the error code using wordpad or others, NOT notepad or it looks like a huge mess. Performance Mods: DO NOT USE OUTDATED PERFORMANCE MODS SUCH AS SKYBOOST. MANY PERFORMANCE ISSUES HAVE BEEN PATCHED SINCE PATCH 1.3, or 2012. Use hialgoboost, project optimization, or optimizer textures(outside modifier). Graphics Enhancing Mods(ENB etc.): For any graphics enhancing mods, make sure your mods are not graphically enhancing the same objects. So don't install 2 different mods that graphically enhance the same particles of say, a river's water. Don't install two lighting mods at the same time, or it won't look pretty. Troubleshooting is pretty self-explanatory. Graphics mods never cause crashes. Instead, you will see different or incorrect textures. Always go through the other mods if you have any issues. Major Causes of Crashes OR Issues: This is a checklist for major causes of crashes or other issues. These cause what I believe to be 99.99% of the crashes and troubleshooting issues modders get: Missing Master/esm or missing plugin/esp *A mod refers to a plugin or masters that DOES NOT EXIST. check which esm or esps are missing with Wyre Bash. uninstall with nmm or/and manually remove in data folder mods that rely on other nonexistent mods. Using mod organizer, check your esms or esps on the side and deactivate them manually. Causes crashes instantly on start* Incompatible Mods *Use LOOT for load order! Also try not to use mods that do the same thing. Wrye bash can also fix many compatible mods by making a bashed patch. Check the Wrye Bash section or their download page for more details* Outdated-Faulty Mods *check the tips and tricks section for avoiding these mods! Basically the tips and tricks section tells us to avoid so and so mods!* Infinite Loading and game freezing *due to bad memory allocation or memory allocation failure, there's a newer mod that fixes it "Safety Load"* Bad save files *Very difficult to fix, AVOID bad mods that have too many dirty edits etc or are outdated... sometimes forces a save file to become completely UNPLAYABLE Hard to confirm, is it the mod or is it the save? use Skyrim Save Cleaner to remove refids* Bad/outdated .ini tweaks *go to Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Skyrim.ini Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Skyrimprefs.ini and delete the .ini (s) to refresh the ini tweaks. Warning: forces you to completely redo Skyrim Configurator or Skyrim Launcher settings* Tips and Tricks When Downloading: 1a. Take note of the description. Read it carefully for compatibility, bug issues and installion! 1b. Usually, all you have to do is go to files and click "Download with Manager", or if with mod manager, download compressed file!(duh.) 1c. In Files, optional files may contain compatibility patches. Check them out! 1d. Also pay attention to when a mod was last updated. As a rule of thumb 2012 and earlier may cause crashes, bugs, dirty edits, unfixable save files... HELL, if they do anything beyond changing textures, AVOID THEM 2. Right in "description", check "Last updated" below the menu. Most older mods(2012 and eariler) ARE BUGGY and will not work well. I have to repeat this because. this. is. SO. IMPORTANT. 3. READ THE COMMENTS! Very useful information can be found about bugs, issues or compatibilities. 4. Google it. read the comments. seriously. WinRaR or alternative: http://www.winrar.com/ For WinRaR, use it to open the compressed mod file and extract everything to a folder. extracting to data folder itself may not work due to admin privileges, so extract it to say, a folder in desktop. Then, Click and drag OR copy from inside the new folder and paste it where it needs to be. Usually, you need to paste in here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\data OR C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim If you have Skyrim in another directory, the folders are ...\skyrim\data ...\skyrim Simply read the readme.txt or instructions that come with a mod. SKSE: http://skse.silverlock.org/ A must have for many if not all popular and game-changing mods, such as SKYUI. Mod not working? Do you have SKSE? SKSE extends the powers of a mods' scripts and optimizes it. Installation: Simply download, and extract to ...|skyrim. Overwrite ...|skyrim|data After installation, YOU MUST run SKSE, not Skyrim Launcher exe or Skyrim exe. If using a mod manager, be sure to run through SKSE. Nexus Mod Manager: http://skyrim.nexusm...s/modmanager//? Download and install. Pretty self explanatory. Remember to check the mods for updates. Mods->Latest Version Download mods via the "Download with Manager" button. Mod Organizer: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/1334/? A mod manager that allows you to keep "profiles", mods for different loads and setups. Also separates them into directories. Arguably the "better" nexus mod manager for these reasons. Super useful if you want to run different mods on different saves. Download the mods manually, and install the compressed files using the organizer. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO EXTRACT THE COMPRESSED FILES. LOOT: http://loot.github.io/ Download manually, and run the application as administrator from anywhere on computer. Run it when installing new mods! Gives detailed information about dirty edits, mods, and incompatibilities! SkyUI: http://skyrim.nexusm...com/mods/3863/? Download using manager, and go through the install. Many mods use the MCM interface that comes with SkyUI. Mod Configuration Menu is found in the menus. Escape Key(default)-> Mod Configuration You can configure the settings of other mods through the mod configuration menu. Unofficial Skyrim Patch and DLC Patches: Bug fixes before and after 2013 Legendary Edition that have not been fixed by Bethesda! DO NOT UNINSTALL or it may break your save. There are no unsafe changes. Unofficial Skyrim Patch: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19/? Dawnguard DLC: http://skyrim.nexusm...om/mods/23491/? Hearthfire DLC: http://skyrim.nexusm...om/mods/25127/? Dragonborn DLC: http://skyrim.nexusm...m/mods/31083//? High Resolution DLC: http://skyrim.nexusm...om/mods/31255/? Safety Load http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/46465/? Newer mod that blocks infinite loading screen bug by fixing memory allocation. Wyre Bash: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/1840/? Installation: A pretty self-explanatory installer. To make a bashed patch 1. Open, click "Mods" tab find "Bashed Patch, 0.esp" 2. Right click and click on "Rebuild Patch" 3. Click "Build Patch" This makes mods more friendly and compatible with each other. Wyre Bash also discovers missing masters(esm) or missing plugins(esp). Just go to Mods Tab: If anything is "Red", you can find a fix! Save Game Cleaner: http://skyrim.nexusm...om/mods/31724/? Install manually, and extract. 1. Load your save file. 2. Open the console using the ~ key on your keyboard and type the following: save mysave 1 3. The game will make a dump file, so wait a few minutes. "mysave.ess.txt" AND "mysave.ess" 5. Run SKYRIM Save Cleaner.exe 6. click on "fix all REFR's", Follow the prompts "mysave.ess.txt" AND "mysave.ess" are in your skyrim saves folder Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Saves 7. once finished load "mysave.ess" from in-game skyrim load menu. The application resets a lot of references, removing dead bodies etc. Use for bloated saves for much faster load speeds. May also fix broken "saves". Skryim Configurator: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/814/? Install manually, extract and run. Change the settings to what you want. It saves changes to .ini files, just choose and click "Apply". Much more convenient and thorough than the default launcher. Changes graphics, sound and controls. Hialgoboost: http://skyrim.nexusm...om/mods/15123/? Graphics card booster, reduces lag and significantly decreases loading times. Extract into ...\skyrim When it's running: there's a pop-up before Skyrim start, and a logo at the top right when playing. Hialgoboost improves render performance by reducing resolution of pixels selectively. When you would normally lag and receive a FPS drop, Hialgoboost instead reduces the pixels and keeps your FPS steady. Project Optimization: http://skyrim.nexusm...m/mods/32505//? Extract and run. Improvements to interiors, increases performance. Makes everything you cannot see, not run. ...|skyrim Generate FNIS for Users: http://skyrim.nexusm...om/mods/11811/? Adds animations to game. Download, and install. ...|skyrim Run Generate FNIS for Users after installation, and go through the options. Creates and changes animations in game to your liking. SUM: http://skyrim.nexusm...om/mods/29865/? Unifies all SkyProc patchers for patch adding. Download, and run the java program to patch the game for mods like Skyrim Redone(SkyRe) and Dual Sheath Redux. Optimizer Textures: http://skyrim.nexusm...om/mods/12801/? Optimizes textures via compression. Download, and run. Click under "Profiles" and choose your optimization *minimum(safe), medium, maximum* Optimizes textures by making them compressed(and smaller) without reducing much or sometimes any noticeable quality. TES5Edit: http://skyrim.nexusm...om/mods/25859/? Download, and run. Use the application only if you know what you are doing. Usually used by mod creators to find out if their mods have dirty edits, you can use it to to alternatively fix some old dirty mods. For "simple" mod cleaning: 1. In the master/plugin selction, right click and select none. 2. Use LOOT, and check which mods have dirty edits *SELECT ONLY THE MODS THAT ARE DIRTY*. 3. Right-click where the form ids are, and click "Apply Filter for Cleaning" 4. Afterwords, right-click again and click on Undelete and Disable References Remove "Identical to Masters" Records A.K.A. UDR records and ITM Dirty edits do not always need to be cleaned, usually LOOT automatically sets load orders to work perfectly. However, mods with many dirty edits are mods that cause the most crashes. Project Stability: http://skyrim.nexusm...om/mods/32363/? Ini Tweaks and other stability fixes. Useful walkthrough(not a mod!). A huge source for this guide. ENB: http://wiki.step-pro...ab=Introduction A helpful guide for ENB! Graphics enhancing mods typically don't need that much troubleshooting, and the step by step guide is there. Usually, it's just like installing an ordinary mod but if you have any graphical issues, check that guide. Use this link to get good mods. Sorted by endorsements(2013): http://skyrim.nexusm...earchresults//? Click on "sort by endorsed" The best mods are usually the most endorsed. Check them all out! Nyquist
There is some stuff that is wrong. Bashed patch does not remove all/most conflicts it works mainly with leveled lists+some armors records etc.this is why usually a second mega patch such as merged patch is necessary and internal compatability patches as well. The description should be amended. Or how would you make two fondamentaly incompatibke mods such as CoT and Pure weathers compatible via bashed patch. (ps making them compatible does not make sense) I would also ask for an example mod that corrupted game only by having itm or udr. I concur that in case of ctd it might help removing/reducing them but savegame corruption is a different kind of beast. Usually badly written scripts and user input is required to achieve that. For tools script scalpel makes more sense with logging enabled. Also some newer savegame script cleaners have come out. This is a great little post but it seems to be all over the place. Neither aimed at beginners nor at experienced modders but a bit of both. In the end it's not really a troubleshooting guide but a modding guide due to its structure. Therefore this guide should be updated before being stickied or not have those mods at all. A lot of gems mods are no longer updated for example. But great job at making this it could be stickied if some of this stuff gets amended/corrected.

Nyquist
But aren't these just in the testing phase? He has them enabled but they aren't in the current public build are they? The same thing is with mator smash the version is already functional albeit with bugs and would let us take out wrye bash totaly and just use tes5edit. Hmm albeit the new wrye bash patch looks great. I stand corrected on what it can /will be able to do. You are right as I am using 305. Version I cannot verofy the current official stable release on nexus since I'm on my phone and won't have internet for a while. Camaro could you fire up your tes5edit and check the worldspace edits. I am curious if they were imported correctly as well as the sounds. Since those two have the highest probability of being falsley imported knowing how wrye works, and has pytchon scripts running on record type basis. Sorry guys if I come across as dickish You have done some great work and my post shed some light I hope.

camaro_69_327
@Nyquist..I can just about manage my way around TES5edit...lol....TO me it looks to be doing what it is suppose to do...i look at the world and sound edits (i used Shriakins tag edits) and no Dark RED ..lighter colored red and yellow w/green .....thanks for having me drill down into Tes5Edit, in the bashed patch, i happen to notice one mod (rebirth monster) just stepping all over an important mod (Skyre enemy scaling) so moved one mod and things looked better. going to go in game and see if i totally wreaked my game..lol To me , the more people that try the new Wrye bash , the better. SO much more is being carried into the patch and fixing problems, its worth a few headaches..lol Any more on this and we could take it to PM as i wouldn't want to clutter the thread.
