seedlessgrapes
I've recently re-installed Skyrim in order to begin the game anew, and am currently in the process of creating my character. However, I'm having a few issues with naming. I'd like to give him an authentic Argonian name, but I have several questions regarding this. I hope that there's someone out there who knows the lore of this better than I do. As anyone familiar with this will know, there are three variations of Argonian name. These include: one-word names (e.g. Veezara, Deekus); hyphenated Argonian names (e.g. Talen-Jei, Teeba-Ei); Tamrielic names (e.g. Stands-In-Shallows, Scouts-Many Marshes). I want to know this: If it is possible to create an accurate hyphenated and translated/Tamrielic name for one individual (e.g. "Haj-Ei" translated to "Hides-His-Eyes"), or would one have to concoct a name based on the sounding of the Tamrielic translation (e.g. "Horns-In-Hood" translated to "Hirn-Heed")The origin of one-word names; why are they're not all hyphenated I would appreciate any help given. chanchan05
Well, in some cases, the cyrodillic names were just given by peers, not necessarily having been translated from their original Argonian name. This is because the Saxheel language AFAIK also incorporates other sounds like hisses and growls, making some words difficult if not impossible to pronounce for men and mer. If I remember correctly, there was an Argonian (not in Skyrim) that had a name given by his peers as "Hauls-Rope-Fast" or something like that, because he hauls ropes fast. Sort of like calling someone "that red-haired guy" because you forgot his name, and it would eventually stick as his given name/alias because you can't pronounce his name. So most likely, the Argonians with common tongue names have Saxheel names that are difficult to pronounce. As far as I can tell, there is no actual documentation of the Argonian language, so you can just imagine up any name and give him a descriptive name in the common tongue. For example, you can name him Hasz-Shei and call him, I dunno, "Thunder-Fist-Lizard" because he's a mage specializing in frost magics. I think the dash just signifies a pause in pronunciation, as in Talen-Jei, instead of Talenjei.
seedlessgrapes
Thank you very much for your input - it clears plenty up. I'm still not sure which I'll go for, but whatever the case, I doubt I'll worry about ruining the lore now.

Boombro
It very common and a good idea to name your lizard a Cyrodilic name that shows their talents and skills. I know someone with a tank build name his aims-for-knees another shots-in-dark etc It can be for something related to their looks r a habit as well. LoneWolfEburg
Ah, the Hellenic/Latinate Argonian names from Arena. Quite a lot of lore/background setting has been retconned from game to game.
