okay I played this for nearly a day, 20 hours or so. Going to give a more in depth review of this mod.
In-depth review (after 1 full day of gameplay)
PROS:
Lively atmosphere - There are many more factions that spring up all over the map which contest between each other and against the original vanilla 6 factions. creating a good chaos mix. Of worthy mention is also the many variety and number of mercenaries, outlaws, man hunter groups which roam all over and can be hired by both npcs and player. Experienced players will no longer get bored as easily over fighting the same usual bandits or neighbouring factions. There's always a variety in this mod!
Damage management - How damage is being handled in this game is much better. I always felt higher tier troops were way too OP in how they can kill in 1-2 hits and how fast they could do that in many mods. In this mod, effectiveness of armour is better so it takes a lot more hits to kill someone well geared, this works for both the npc vs player and player vs npc, this makes the action last longer, and encourages more skill at swinging your hits.
Variety - there are more units and items. Who doesn't like good quality textured equipment? There is a lot more of those in this mod, from armour, weapons to unit types. Did I mention elephants? Yes, there are war elephants in this mod!
CONS:
Stability issues - mod loading time can be longer. 2 mins for me on a good gaming machine to first load the mod when I first start up the game. There may be lag if you have huge battle size too due to the amount of textures to be loaded.
Immersion-breaking - this mod is built over floris. personally, I recognize one of floris' merits is how accurate it is to history/culture of the factions. The floris creators were very detailed regarding the type of equipment, names used for equipment/units/lords for each faction. For example the rank of Hertogi, Hersir for Nords. The seax, danish long axe for nords. Names like 'gebur' for nord troops. Anyone who studied saxon/viking culture understood how these reflected the nord faction well. In short, floris did very well at the use of accurate terms/names and weapons for each and every faction's culture. A New Dawn takes a drift away from this merit, by use of more generic terms such as simply 'battle-axe' for axes, 'fighter' as a name for a unit in this mod. This in my opinion kills the immersion by this mod's introduction of culturally/historically inaccurate weapons/names for ranks or units. Then again this mod is new and isn't in its final version yet, so there may be yet be many more improvements to come over this.
All in all, still a lot of fun. 7.5/10
