I bought a stock overclocked BFG NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT a few weeks ago and it's been working great so far in all of my games. Fallout 3 is among the many games to run much smoother, but it also occcasionally crashes my PC when I enter VATS. I've tried upgrading to patch 1.7 and that might have reduced the number of crashes, but they still happen. So far, I've upgraded to new motherboard, sound, and graphics drivers, though I haven't tested them in Fallout 3 yet (I will later, it's midnight here). Here is a link to the topic describing the problem. But that's not what this topic is about.

I want a program that I can use to turn on/off overclock and adjust how much overclocking my card is doing. I've heard of NVIDIA System Tools and RivaTuner, any others? What would be the best one?

Try the MSI afterburner app, its a great tool for overclocking your nvidia card, i use it and it does a fantastic job.

I almost have my gtx470 card set at the gtx480's level.

it also has temp read outs in game as well.

Your problem is that you probably have a unbalanced system, the msi app moves the shader clock as well as the core clock at the same time.

Keeps it balanced.

It can declock as well if your power supply is not up to par.

Whats your system specs??

hehe, I'd be careful with that Keep an eye on your temperatures Laptops run pretty toasty as they are.

I once overclocked my 7950GT with Riva Tuner...don't like to overclock GPUs though lol...learned my lesson when I fried my Geforce 2 MX...own fault though...cranked up the voltage a little bit too much I've been wanting to try it on my 5770...but it does the job as it is...and I don't think the cooler is sufficient enough if I did.

depends...anything above 70C on a CPU is a no no for AMD...Intel's can go a heck of a lot higher.

GPUs...well supposedly they cook themselves at 100C or some range like that...but the hotter it gets the less the performance is. I'd make sure it doesn't go above 75-80C...but I'm not entirely sure on a laptop. Everything is all crammed in there nice and snug and if it doesn't have heatpipes it'll get hot very fast. I had to make feet for mine out of clay to keep it elevated because it ran hot as heck...but it was a mid 2000 laptop...sure they have better cooling these days.

Just played Bad Company 2 a bit (without overclocking) and the temp. of the GPU was at 78° max...

Woah, that's toasty heh. I wouldn't overclock unless you get a laptop cooler. 75-80 is an acceptable range under full load, but it's good to keep it lower than that. Overclocking it will create more heat. Ah, I guess the kill point is 115C on most cards...it's just not good to run em above 80C. It won't die, but it creates a lot of stress on it and could kill it eventually. Lost a HDD on my laptop due to the whole system being too hot.

Yeah, I stopped it. Well, I have to say, while playing Battlefield I had the media player open and Battlefield set to high settings, but though I don't want to overclock it now...it reached 80 degrees with overclocking the Gpu from 609 to 620 Mhz...I better stop it right now. Maybe it will get better a bit if I use GameBooster too.
