"Just run," she thought to herself. "If I run then everything will be okay".

As the clouds broke to reveal the starscape above her, a tingle of primal terror shuddered down Jessica Ainsley's spine. The rolling hills stretched out for miles before her, dimly lit by the pale grey light of the waxing gibbous moon. She spared a glance behind her before breaking out into a run down the hill, stumbling slightly on the dewy grass beneath her feet. "Run," she thought again. "I've nothing to do but run".

A guttural, growling roar shattered the still night air in the woods nearly a mile behind her. Her legs felt as if they were on fire but she pushed them all the harder, her bare feet pounding against the cool hard ground almost as loudly as her heart as it beat a frantic rhythm against her ribs. "Keep running".

Her foot slid on the grass beneath her, and she went tumbling to the ground in a tangle of hair and bedclothes. She scrambled to her feet, her hands flailing as she struggled to regain a semblance of balance. She glanced behind her again, and her blood ran cold - a dark, hulking shape lurched forward out of the trees, heading straight for her. She gave a strangled cry as her feet again found purchase, nearly choking on fear. Another roar, this time amplified by proximity, made her scream involuntarily. Unable to restrain herself, she looked back again - and this time could see the pulsing rage that poured from the beast's cold, hateful blue eyes. It leapt into the air and soared above her, bringing with it a stench like stale sweat, fetid blood, and rotting meat. It landed only a dozen feet ahead of her, rising to its hind legs and screeching it's horrible cry at her, its voice growing hoarse at its apex as it unleashed all its terrible might. She came to a sliding stop and bolted to her right, screaming again as the beast almost literally flew into her path once more.

As it landed in front of her, its eyes locked with hers. They were a cold, steely blue; but behind the animalistic rage and bloodlust sat an unmistakable intelligence - and an evil that stretched beyond anything nature alone could ever create. It was panting almost as heavily as she was, its foul smelling breath coming in ragged, icy bursts. As it stepped closer, the moonlight fell across its face and illuminated its profile, revealing scabbed and decrepit flesh hanging loosely beneath tangled, mangy fur. The stench of death clung to it tighter than its skin, and poisoned the air around it as it brought its fangs to bear.

"RUN," she thought. "YOU HAVE TO RUN, GOD PLEASE RUN."

But before she had the chance it was there, its sinewy arm reaching through the night and throwing her bodily to the ground. She felt a terribly sharp pain in her side as its claws tore through her ribs followed by a spreading warmth down her side. Her shredded nightgown clung to her, sticky with blood, as she rolled across the grass. She tried to lift herself off the ground but her arm didn't have the strength to support her weight. She rolled onto her back as once again the creature was at her; she thrust out her feet and felt them connect with the cold, matted fur of its belly. It hardly seemed to notice, swatting her legs aside as easily as if they were smoke; pain seared through her as she felt her hips crack and her shins splinter from the force.

She screamed in pain, but instantly fell silent. Blood flooded into her mouth, her body went numb, and the world around her went dark.

So. Hi there folks. I'm Hyac. I've spent the vast majority of my year-ish on the Nexus over at the Skyrim boards, but I've been doing online roleplaying for almost a decade now and decided that an old idea, that didn't work out so well in the past, deserved a shot with a whole new group of people. I'm hoping there's enough interest in the idea to get it going.

First, a bit about the world we'll be playing in. The story takes place around about 2020, in a fictional North American city very much like Toronto, Chicago, etc. Queensbridge is a bustling hub for the dark, mistrustful shadow culture that is that of self-styled "Hunters", men and women of all stripes who battle paranormal forces of which the rest of the world remains blissfully ignorant. Most of those who form this culture are nearly as dangerous and vicious as the beings they destroy. Rivalry and mistrust are the words of the day, with most hunters moving alone or in "packs" and shunning others of their world. Theft, deceit, and muscle are often employed to obtain from each other the information or supplies required, and even those who buy and sell information freely are far from Samaritans.

And this world is in turmoil. A rash of killings - seventeen deaths in four months - has the public running about in a panic, and the police searching fruitlessly for a serial murderer. While the police urge patience and calm until they get their man, the world of hunters knows full well that they will never find him. They know that the killer is not in fact a man at all, but a vicious creature the likes of which even their world has rarely encountered before. With few theories, little experience, and even less lore to aid in the hunt for the creature, one hunter has made a move that has stunned her world into wary silence: she has called together the city's hunters in an effort to assemble a joint force against the creature.

I'll be playing the part of Miranda Harris, known in the hunting community as Memoria. Her character sheet will be in the following post. Miranda is the aforementioned "she" who's called the hunter's conference. She has a small "pack" of her own, who I'll list as secondary characters alongside her own character sheet. These can be considered controllable NPCs, though I ask to be consulted via PM first if you intend to use them for anything; all PMs are directed to my phone, which is effectively stapled to my hand. So long as I'm not in class or asleep, you can generally expect a response within an hour.

Players can play pretty much any sort of character they like, though it's strongly requested that they be human. If you desperately have your heart set on playing a supernatural creature, please PM me first and we can try to work something out; note that werewolves and vampires are off-limits for pretty much entirely arbitrary reasons of my own.

I've been told in the past that I can be a little heavy handed as a threadmaster. I'd like to apologise in advance if my style differs too significantly from what this community is used to. If you have any problems or concerns, please feel free to PM me before running to the moderation. I'm eager to see this RP succeed, and that can't happen if I'm being an ass about something.

If you have any questions about the game, please ask.

Name: Miranda Harris. Known in the hunting community by the pseudonym Memoria Saeculum.

Age: 27 years old.

Description:

  • Height: ~1.70m/~5'6"
  • Weight: ~51kg/~112lbs
  • Hair: Dark brown; shoulder length; most often styled in a ponytail.
  • Eyes: Brown.
  • Weapon(s): A telescopic silvered iron quarterstaff. The staff collapses to only a foot and a half long, but by twisting the handle can be extended to a full six feet. She also carries small explosive charges packed with rock salt.
  • Apparel: Memoria wears black denim pants, a dark red shirt, and a black leather bomber jacket that once belonged to her mother. She also wears two rings - her parents' wedding bands - on her right hand, one on her ring finger and the other on her index.

History/Biography: Miranda Harris, wealthy heiress of the late Drs. Joseph and Natalie Bonhomme-Harris, is the least assuming of Queensbridge's social elite. She's young, but no longer a child. Striking, but not pretty. Charming, but not enchanting. She goes where she's invited, entertains when she's expected, and gives to whatever cause may ask. To the people of Queensbridge, the name Miranda Harris invites the image of an intelligent, well mannered, but ultimately forgettable young woman from one of the oldest such families in the city.

Beneath this clean, healthy exterior however lies a very troubled, bitterly lonely young woman. Miranda's father was a physicist, a paranormal researcher killed in the course of an experiment gone wrong when she was six. Her mother was killed in the same accident, and Miranda lived thanks only to the heroism of her father's young assistant. Now holding PhD and paranormal investigator himself, Dr. Seward Chase used his connections and knowledge to train Miranda to hunt and combat the creatures he and her father spent their lives studying. She has been training intensively in hand to hand combat, stealth, and deductive reasoning for over a decade, and has been a hunter in her own right for nearly six years. She specialises in ghosts, poltergeists, and malevolent spirits in general.

Miranda's "Pack":

Professor Seward Chase, professor of chemistry at the University of Queensbridge, holds a PhD in each biology, chemistry, and physics as well as a Master's in engineering. He studied at the foot of Miranda's father, a paranormal researcher who while considered eccentric and misguided by the scientific community at large was considered by the hunting community to be one of the foremost authorities on the supernatural. Dr. Chase is now himself considered an authority, and sells information for the majority of hunters in North America.

Tyler Grey is an eager, enthusiastic but young and inexperienced hunter - only 19 years old - who formed Miranda's "pack" when they were introduced through Professor Chase nearly two years ago. He hero-worships Dr. Chase and nurses a secret - albeit poorly kept secret - affection for Memoria. He is the only person Miranda considers to be a friend.

Detective Constable William Mallory is a detective with the Queensbridge Police Service who serves as an unofficial - and usually unwilling - agent for Dr. Chase, clandestinely sharing information about investigations pertinent to the hunting community. A firm believer in the rule of law, who resents the criminal activities to which hunters often resort in order to accomplish their goals.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...
  • 3 months later...

So four months later with no response sort of seems like a no-brainer, but I am in fact still interested in getting this started. Is there a specific reason, something I've done incorrectly, that's keeping people away? Or is it just not of sufficient interest?

I'm going to offer up a guess here based on my own personal opinions. Firstly no, you didn't do anything wrong. I just don't think anyone really knows where to go with this. Most RPs here are based on games or shows that we've all played or seen and that have established lore. We all sort of know where we'd fit in with those stories. With a completely new made up story such as yours... well it's a little daunting. We haven't exactly spent thousands of hours guiding a character through your world in order to get motivated enough to write a roleplay about it. Good luck though and try not to let it bother you if no one else jumps in. Lots of stories fizzle out here. Just the way it goes.
