Maybe another quest that didn't get finished. Or part of some lesser known quest.

Alright, after some looking around, it appears to be connected with the Alyeid Ruin of Nornal (some ways east of memorial cave, SE of imperial city. I don't know what the connection is, but hey, any excuse to go running through a ruin is a good excuse. Just remember, the nice thing about a mystery is in trying to figure it out for yourself.

I headed to Nornal, and incidentally found ANOTHER 'Rusty Key' in a chest inside.



The key (not sure which one, or if they're dupes of eachother) did indeed open a gate inside Nornal, that was underwater... the gate didn't lead to anything, though, just a short passage with nothing in it. Or did I miss something? I was kind of hoping it was the second Varla cage remover.

Cryo: one key is on the second floor of the guild in the room with all the bonemeal in it, the other key is inside Nornal. Both are found all by their lonesomes in chests.

Yes, underwater, is the location of one of the Dark Brotherhood Dead Drops, I think it says to kill the Khajiit.

Ottomus, Cryocry did indeed mention earlier that there's a DB quest involved with Nornal, please pay attention to the thread before posting a one liner about something.

Maybe they shipped two to Cheydinhal on accident, and were looking for the other one, but couldn't find it. And, just before they got payed, so they quit for the day. Lazy shippers...

So sorry! I was in the middle of posting when the phone rang, so I just hit post. In the future I will try to restrain my enthusiasm.

Back OT, why on earth would there be more than one key to open a door which leads to nothing? Maybe it is activated by a quest or something, like Vagrant0 mentioned earlier? Has anyone done all the quests that could tell me? It's driving me nuts.

Finding A Rusty Key in all the towns except Bravil makes me think there is at least one there somewhere, we just haven't found it yet. Ha, we should write a quest that gives prizes for collecting these keys, since so far they seem pretty useless.
