TransnerferN7
hi I am a mere few months away from completing my new gaming rig, and I am super exited to start modding skyrim. But, I've heard that a few people cant actually mod skyrim on windows 8.1, and some who say they can't even run it! Is this true? Can you mod on windows 8.1? And whilst im at it, how is windows 8.1 in terms of gaming. Would be really useful if i got a straight answer, even better if they use windows 8.1. So, can you mod skyrim on windows 8.1? thanks
dayglo98
Straightest answer : 8.1 is the best OS for gaming. Also I am modded to hell and back and everything works fine in Skyrim. cailil365
I had problems with Skyrim when Windows 8.0 forced me into updating to 8.1. But after a while I ironed it all out. TBH I think most people's 8.1 problems were because they updated not on clean installs of 8.1. If you're starting from scratch with 8.1 you should be fine. All my other games run seamlessly in 8.1 and I've had zero other issues since I fixed the Skyrim problems.
Deleted3507349User
I started out with 8 then updated to 8.1. I have FO3, FO:NV, Oblivion, and Skyrim (all through Steam). Before the update they all ran perfectly (this is a high-end gaming laptop). After the update they all ran slow UNTIL I reinstalled Oblivion, then they all ran perfectly again. The only thing I can conclude is that reinstalling Oblivion under the updated OS allowed Steam to install something I otherwise didn't have (but needed). Also, Windows 8/8.1 has lousy DirectX 9 support. MS deprecated it, so it's emulated now. This likely won't affect a vanilla-ish Skyrim, but it may prove to be an issue for older games. Luckily, if you're having issues the fix is easy; just download and install directx_jun2010_redist from Microsoft and install it.
saurusmaximus
I'm using 8.1 (upgraded from 8.0) with no issues. I've heard a lot of folks say Win7 is better for gaming, but I've never used it so I can't say. As far as Skyrim is concerned, I will say that my version came off a disc, not from Steam, if that makes any difference.
