I am having troble talking to some of my followers and telling them that this is their new home and releaseing them when not needed. Can some one help?

AFT technically does not set the Home for an individual Follower - Just the individual Followers Home Outfit

You can Globally change -most- locations to a Home- thru AFT Power Tweak Spell:
Tools/ - Set Home :
This button supports the Home Outfit by allowing you to
mark your current location as a player home. This convenience method
was added to help support custom player homes and has no effect on
where followers go when dismissed.

With MHiYH with AFT you can set any individual AFT Followers to a Home, Sleep Area, Work Place and an area to Guard.
