Nexus Mod Manager won't download mods

I've installed Skyrim and NMM, and applied the download tweak for Chrome in NMM's settings, and still clicking the "Download in Mod Manager" button on the Nexus site does not cause any action in NMM. I've also tried restarting Chrome in case there was some URL association that needed updating, still no download. Loading from file works, but what's the point of NMM in that case?
