Immersive Compass & map

Here's a suggestion that would take us one step closer to being able to get rid of those pesky quest markers.

Instead of having the compass be displayed on-screen as a HUD, have an actual, physical, handheld compass that your character has to whip out in order to look at. Equip it in the "weapons" slot (since pickaxes and woodcutters axes are listed in weapons, let's just assume that all "tools" are listed there), and then, you can look at the compass the same that you would look at the under-side of your shield.

Pivot in place, and the compass would adjust in real time so that it always points north. Have 36 notches on the compass, in 10 degree increments, to help pinpoint navigation be a little easier.

Loose the compass, and you have to buy another one.

We could also keep the maps, but add enough man-made landmarks (such as road signs) that the map could simply be a plain-old regular-ass map, instead of a GPS tracking system.

Then, when a character marks a location on your map, a cutscene appears, where the location they're marking suddenly appears on the map. Then, you'd be offered the chance to add your own "notes" to this location in one of eight colors (you can add these notes any time, but you'll be offered the chance to add them before the cutscene ends, when the circumstances surrounding the map update are still fresh in your memory).

These notes would, of course, be erasable. Either that, or replacement, clean maps would be really really cheap.

Any takers?
