To claim "authorship" of the "patched end product" (technically a simple linkage between the old mod and its new masterfile) is thus farfetched, to say the least.
Have a Kudo.
Probably the most sane observation about what was going on until a few days ago. Poached files and five minutes in a game utility does not a modder make.

Short end, if Nexus were mine to run. A patched upload would be queued and the site would attempt to contact the origin author within specified time frame before releasing patched version for use. As long as the work remains true to original creation and credit due I see no problem with the patch being opened for downloading if the author fails to respond.

I am amazed at the impatience and selfishness being shown by folks who cannot wait for their favourite mods to be converted, or who wish to get acclaim by converting said mods, and then accuse the modders who protest of throwing a tissy and calling for "Ban the child". Some of the greatest modders of all have taken their mods down at one point or another due to either poaching or trolling.
Dark0ne understandably wishes to keep modders on side and we should support him in this.

Additionally, sometimes I think originality and creativity is lacking of late, I would far rather see new fresh ideas employed to separate Bethesda games, which are far too similar for my liking to begin with (FO3 & NV especially). Rehashing the old/established mod work only exacerbates the cloned feel.
That is besides the moral aspect of using others efforts to make a name for yourself; if you simply wanted to port a mod over from Oblivion/Fallout 3 etc., why not just do it for yourself, you don't HAVE to post it up, IF, indeed, you are not doing it for the recognition you would undoubtedly receive...that point is worth thinking about.
I have faith in Nexus above any other site hosting modders work, and have faith in their claim that this is in the interests of modders. And the community should heed the old saying 'don't bite the hand that feeds you', in terms of losing modders who feel their efforts have been abused, and in arguing against the point when it's clear Nexus is doing this purely to eradicate said abuses, no more.

Personally, I think the site is a bit too harsh with regards to the advise of not posting patched work. If an author is unreachable for whatever reason and his work is ONLY updated to work in NV and given credit. There shouldn't be an issue. At the same time should said author return after the patched version has been cycling and throws a tissy and removes all their work. I'm fine with that too. Ban the child.
Short end, if Nexus were mine to run. A patched upload would be queued and the site would attempt to contact the origin author within specified time frame before releasing patched version for use. As long as the work remains true to original creation and credit due I see no problem with the patch being opened for downloading if the author fails to respond.
If the site were run as you suggest there would be a hell of a lot less content on here than there is now.

To those that think Dark0ne and company are being harsh; do yourselves a favor and follow the Site History link and read it. Dark0ne isn't being a jerk about permissions; he's experienced what happens if you think you been permitted to do something and later find out you weren't first-hand. If he and the others involved had acted like some of you suggest you have the right to, there wouldn't be a Nexus Network to put your mods on.
Reading the site history is an eye-opener for those members who weren't around for the old tessource days. But the thing is, people won't read The Rules so how can they be expected to read anything else?
Less than a month ago porting, adapting, converting, ripping whatever you want to call it was never an on-going issue. It happened, but not like the recent tsunami of foolishness. The release of New Vegas and some of the fan base are the cause. We all know this and can see the general 'gimme' attitude in their posts. There was an influx of troublemakers to Nexus when FO3 was released and they were weeded out. The same will be true for New Vegas. Just give it time and the arrogance and sense of entitlement will go away.
I believe in my heart Dark0ne and the staff are doing the right thing and given time and few spankings they'll get things running smoothly so everyone is somewhat happy.

commenting is bad too, people can't behave.
some means to remove bad commenting would be nice...

could be easily resolved if one is willing..
