Could geothermal or Tidal Energy be the way to go?

I've been looking into either or both of these as a viable renewable energy source that would lessen the environmental impact of the equipment used and I was wondering what others thought about it.

Here are a few articles on them.

Or... You know... We could just use Thorium reactors and save the large amount of expense and logistics involved with trying to make geothermal or tidal energy work. It also doesn't have the same locational limitations or risk of permanent damage to core function.

An energy source which is clean, efficient, and abundant in the universe. But oh... right, it has that whole problem of being a nuclear fuel and subject to misinformation and mindsets that havn't changed since the 70's.

Not to mention it doesn't have byproducts that are useful in weapons production.

I am REAL curious why this technology never took off.

Some of it is because of various lobbyists who are either against cheap alternative energy, or who are waiving doomsday anti-nuclear signs. Afterall the buzz (and government funding) is about "renewable" or "green energy", not about nulcear energy.

Some of it is because supposedly it has been in development for a few decades and has not yet reached a proven state. Beyond that, I couldn't guess.
